The city council backed down only after an overwhelming flood of messages and emails; almost all of which supported the Marines in particular, and the armed forces in general. The threat of federal withdrawal of funding also was a big stick.
As a Californian, I have to say that the city council and the more vocal citizenry of Berkeley's attitude is something I'm ashamed of. True, the town itself is nice and not everyone there shares the same views as the more vocal ones; but I sure wish that the troublemakers (my choice of words, my opinion) could see what it's like to live in a society whose rights have NOT been guaranteed by a strong military. They ought to be giving thanks every day for all our soldiers, both active duty and vets, who have given so much to insure that freedom.
