Wrecker Hydraulic Drive Motor Repair
We had a leak around the shaft on the end of the hydraulic drive motor on the hoist drum of our M543A2. I saw someone was asking a while ago about repairing these. We took the motor off the hoist winch worm drive and disassembled the it by taking the tie bolts out of the case. We found there is an O-ring at each end of the shaft. These are the only seals in the motor. We will need to put Speedi-Sleeves on both areas of the motor shaft where the O-rings run because the shaft is pitted from moisture having collected there. We will then re-assemble the motor with new O-rings and the problem should be solved. The O-ring on the winch drive box end of the motor was leaking as well, only it could not be seen doing it like the one on the square drive end of the shaft. It had allowed a lot of oil down into the winch drive, but no damage was done.
This repair can be done by someone with reasonable mechanical aptitude. It is a good idea to scribe lines on the outside of the motor body so the components are re-assembled in the same way they were taken apart. Warning: The motor is heavy!!!
Regards Marti
