if I were in a position for either, I'd wait and save up for a 923a2 so I could utilize a higher top speed

The M818 is a tractor. Is your travel trailer a 5th wheel? M923A2 is a cargo truck.

Between the 818 and 923, I'd purchase the 923 for your towing operation.
Both trucks are going to ride rough, but the 923 has a longer wheel base and will ride smoother than the 818.
Working on the engine in the 923 is also easier due to the hood tilting out of the way verses having to climb on top of the fenders.
The 923 also wins with the Allison automatic transmission.

I concur with nonotagain.
The 818 will beat you to death with no weight on the 5th wheel and there is a lot more cab noise.
The 900 series trucks have a wider cab and more creature comforts.
If I were going to buy a 5 ton it would be a 900 series....especially now that the gooberment is dumping them in large numbers.
With the cargo truck you will have the advantge of big cargo bed to haul even more stuff.
