May be a dumb question: Can civillians purchase the batteries that the mil. had in the cucv's or should I forget that thought and just buy red tops?

You can buy them, but they aren't worth the expense and don't have much of a warranty. The battery tray in a CUCV is designed for 6TL or group 31 batteries.

CUCVs have an extra starter relay under the dash. It is known to either rust and not work making the truck not start or to stick in the on position letting the starter run until the wiring harness or the starter itself burns up and is permanently damaged. You should read the two links below and the links mentioned in them before you even put batteries in the truck. This is probably the most important thing to know and to think about so you will know what to do should it happen to you.

The relay is mounted to the plate that the big plug is mounted to under the edge of the dash next to the 4WD lever. It is the bigger silver relay next to two black relays. Its purpose is to switch the 12v single from the ignition switch to 24v to trigger the 24volt starter. It has four wires plugged into it, The red wire is 24 volt feed. Solid purple goes to the starter. Black is ground. Purple with white stripe is the ignition feed. You can unplug these and jump the red to the purple and start the truck in an emergency. There is a post further down with the part numbers.

Could it be possible to wire this to a switch on the dash so you flip it on to crank then flip it off to not burn anything up?

How can I tie down a S-250 shelter on a M1008?
Do I need the mounting kit and if so, has somebody got a spare mounting kit to sell?
Thanks for helping!

Chris

You probably could, but it would have to be heavy duty because of the load.

This is directed to all of the new guys, not just Alredneck. You should be asking these questions in new threads, not in this one. This thread is meant to be answers to FAQs.

Umm, why create a new thread when we can keep all the questions in one thread especially if it relates to a previous FAQ, that way it does not become a new FAQ and waste such space in other areas!

Its more convenient to look up info in one thread with a bunch of posts ( all with relating material ) than it is to search through countless threads, with countless post.

By the way thanks for the info!
