Default cucv 1008 np208 to np205 swap

I was thinking about swapping out engines to a sbc 350 and am worried about breaking the np208 so was thinking about swapping it for a np205. Does anyone know the output spline count on the th400 transmission? Is it short shaft or long shaft (1.5-2" stickout or 3-3.5" stickout)?

Forgot to mention I would also consider a np203.

I've done the 205 swap years ago but don't remember what's involved. I'd stay away from the 203. They're ok but arn't near as good as a 205 and you'll have full time 4X4 unless you install a kit to convert to part time. I personally think the 208 will hold up fine unless you're going to hop up the 350 or do some serious offroading.

I've been thinking of putting a late version 203,(with the improved gears/chain) I have in my 1008. It has the Specialized Automotive Engineering kit in it which I bought from Bob Chandler years ago. The 203 gives you the pto option that the 205 has and the 208 does not. The best part is I have the matching T400 also!

If I was going to put a 203 in I would have the option of a 203-205 doubler later on. It is an offroad only rig.

84cucv1ton: Thanks! I would appreciate it, can you measure how much shaft sticks out too?

I'm pretty sure it's a 32 spline as well, but I'm not going to swear to it. My buddy swapped a 205 into his truck and it was a direct swap. There are a few versions of the 205, I'd make sure that I got one with a PTO- even if you're not planning to use it immediately, it couldn't hurt to have it.

Why swap? Have you ever broken a 208? I personally have had good luck with them with big tires and big horsepower plus a lower low-range ratio than a 205.

The 205's low range isn't ideal, but it's a stronger, gear-drive case rather than the 208 chain drive case. The 208 is strong enough for most applications, but if he's planning a 350 with a lot of power, in extreme situations, you could outrun the capability of the 208.
