Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the Army experimented with putting the auto tranny from the M135/211 trucks in the M35? If so, was this a direct bolt-up? I am toying around the idea of doing this modification if it doesn't involve making a special adapter to the multifuel motor. Wouldn't this be the best of both worlds? A known reliable auto tranny in a known reliable truck! Has anyone tried this? Of course I wouldn't ruin a good running M211 for the tranny, I would pull one from a junker somewhere.
you would sacrifice speed, no od. and the multifuel probably has too much torque. allison would be a much better choice and it would bolt right up.

its was the power pack of the GMC. the engine, trans and (we dont know what tcase was used) but there was a program to use the GMC power train in the M44 deuces. I m in the process of doing this to me M35 deuce as we speak (with the help of Dave)
Yep, the army (actually GMC, at the Army's request) put the hydramatic in the Reo - but as Westy says, they also put the GMC 302 gas engine in too. This was well before the Multifuel came out.
By the way - the army conducted a lot of dynomemeter test on the Reo's and GMC's when the designs were new. The GMC produced considerably more drawbar pull than the Reo.
did the hydramatic have overdrive? did it have a lock up convertor? if 2 no answers = very poor choice for low rpm multifuel. the allison would be like driving in 4th all the time. ok for off road but not much else.

Been to the local Allison dealer, there does not seem to be an OD+lockup model they thought would do the job until you get into the $$$$ electronics control ones. Anyone find different?

as far as i know there is no really suitable trans due to length or $$$ if you have to have automatic allison is the only real choice. the 3060 without "P" (pto) is short enough to go behind a V8. everything seems to have its own set of problems. that is why i am going forward with od for the 3053 trans. even as expensive as it is, it still gives you everything you need.
