Default Front Axle Input Shaft Bearings?

Hey Guys,

(Posting for a friend) We noticed some...make that a lot...of oil coming from the input shaft on the front axle of my friends M35A2. We parked the truck and I was poking around. The input shaft seems to have quite a lot of up/down/front/back movement. Drained the oil, no "glitter" so the internals are probably okay.

I am unfamiliar with the design of the 2.5T Rockwells, is there a seal there, or just a bearing?

I could use some help with 1.) diagnosing what to replace/what went wrong and 2.) how to go about replacing these parts. Can the upper gears/shafts in the axle be accessed without removing the "chunk"?

Thanks for the help!

When you say "input seal" I assume you are referring to the pinion seals? The seals behind the yoke where the driveshaft attaches?

If so:

Through Shaft axle seal leak repair

Pinion seal removal

need help"part number"

EDIT: This is a good one as well: Axle seals

If you have a lot of pinion bearing play, do a search. You shall find much out in the darkest corners of the forum, grasshopper

I replaced mine some time ago. there is a spacer behind the flange that helps set end play. gasket thickness and amount also does this. wasn't too bad. hardest part is R&R of the drive shaft.

I'd like to clarify/expand on the OP's question. I have a similar issue that needs attention. I've perused the TM (two versions) and I'm fairly comfortable with what is in there, but because it's listed only as a unit repair, there is no reference to servicing only the pinion bearings... Assuming the bearings need more than the preload reset... Can the pinion bearings and/or races be easily retrieved using generic tools or will this require extensive disassembly to get to the back of them?

What TM would cover this? Looked around with no luck.

I am having similar issues as the OP. I took out a Timkin 22780 bearing and 22720 cup from a spare pumpkin I have here. It just started pouring rain, so I will have to dig into the axle under my truck later.

I'm curious because my front is leaking so I'm going to have to tackle that once it cools down (well if it ever cools down). It seems when I have a day off to work on the deuce the temps hit 100 with a heat index of 105 to 110. Got to love these Arkansas summers .

AR, if its just leaking, replace the seal. Take apart, swap seal and put back in reverse order.
