New M915A5's

We turned-in our old M915A3's with less than 5,000 miles on them and picked-up 13 New M915A5 the other day(had to leave #13 at the maintenance shop due to lights not working) :-?
The M915A5's have a lot more room inside and also have gun mounts.

The drive train consists of a Detroit Diesel Series 60 DDEC IV 12.7 liter, 500 horsepower in-line turbocharged diesel engine and an Allison HD
4500 SP (GEN 4) 6-speed automatic transmission connected to Meritor RT-46-164P rear
tandem axles.

Looks like a GREAT truck to drive, a CRAP truck to work on. No more side of the road fix with bailing wire and duct tape.

Keep an eye on the trannies, I know of a batch of 60 that had about 30 - 40 of them needing the trannies reworked due to oil leaks. Some had under 100 miles on them.

Will do. We drove these back from the warehouse at Camp Blanding to West Palm Beach which is about 300 miles. No problems yet.

I must say Top, thems some good looking rigs...i had a brand new A3 in '03 and put over 100K on it before i left Germany. I loved that truck. These look like its got some up-armor underneath the cab there..is that what that is? Always fun to get new trucks in the Army....being the first one to lay down some rubber with something is almost better then s*% lol...

It has some up-armor but you have to install the ArmorPackage (MAP) B-Kit) for oversea duty.

From the TM:
The M915A5 is used to transport M871/M872 series trailers, M967/M969 series 5,000 gallon

fuel tankers, and M1062 series 7,500 gallon fuel tankers on line haul missions.
It has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) of 66,000 lb (29,937.1 kg) and is equipped
with a sliding fifth wheel compatible with a two-inch kingpin. Maximum towed load on kingpin
is 30,000 lb (13,608 kg).
When operating in arctic conditions, the M915A5 can be equipped with an auxiliary heater
mounted under the cab between the BII boxes on the right side of the vehicle. This provides
heat for the cab and the engine cooling system. The auxiliary heater may be operated prior
to starting the engine to provide preheating of engine block.

Love the LED headlights! the fuel tank looks aweful small ?
It always blew my mind that the Military put such small tanks on line haul trucks....when we convoyed from GA to CA we stopped for fuel three times a day. The old M915's were only good for around 400 miles on a tank....if you were lucky.

Average cruising ranges at Gross Combination Weight Rating (GCWR) with a full tank of
fuel will vary based on conditions (e.g., varying loads, prolonged idle, and climatic
conditions). Cruising range is optimally 400 miles (644 km).

Oh, nice! I know what IHT will be buying in 20-30 years! What's the cruise speed?

WM, I agree on the tanks. I'm working on putting a second one on under the pass side, and moving the batteries.
