Electric fuel pump diagnostics

I just installed a new Walbro 24 volt electric fuel pump in my Mighty Mite. It's hooked up according to the inlet and outlet. However when I turn it on, I get air blowing through the inlet. So, I switched the lines figuring it was mismarked. Same thing but more air. I put the lines back to their original position and ran a supply line into a gas can. I primed the fuel pump with gas, turned over the engine and it ran for about a minute then died. The pump was not sucking up any fuel and is dry.

I'm stumpied. Any advice?
