Primary Fuel (Filter's)

I purchased a new primary filter to change out on the old M35A2 Mulitfuel. It was a small short papper cartridge filter, but I still havent changed it yet. My primary fuel filter wont drain, its stopped up, it just drips some. So I decide to purchase the whole filter housing assymbly since I will have to replace a damaged fuel line that comes out of the housing. The assembly only cost $38.00 so why not.

My question is I have two different size filters, one short paper filter and the one in the new assy. is long white filter made of some hard material, probably one that can be cleaned and re-used? Will they both fit, or should I use the better long filter?

When you take off the "can" use some carb cleaner spray to get the gunk out drain valve.

I had to disconnect the fuel line from the fuel tank because the siphon effect kept the fuel flowing through the line.

Also, I wondered about the filter sizes too.

The one I got from Saturn Surplus is tall and the stock one is short. I did not want to remove the sorta cone shaped washer that the short stock filter rests/seals on, to use the longer filter.
I figured if I removed that part, the longer filter would not seat/seal at the bottom of the housing.

Anyone else run into the same problem?

Thanks. This sounds messy, so I'll do it in the lot at work!

The short filter element is for the primary filter near the alternator. The long elements are for the secondary filters on the left side of the engine. Don't know if the micron size of the filter media is coarser for the primary or not.

The new housing assy with the can, came with a long filter, and it looks about the same size of the secondary filters, just made out of different material. What has me wondering is why use a short filter for the primary, if it will take a long one???? The short filter only takes up half the space in the can Right?

SS members!

Maybe I can clear up this mess!

The PRIMARY fuel filter, (the first of three), has the job of removing most of the junk coming out of the fuel tank!

The second and probably more important job, is to remove 99% of the WATER from the fuel!

If water gets past ALL three filters, and gets to the injectors, BOOM! No more injector!

With the high heat and compression, the water will turn to steam, and "wreak havok" with the VERY expensive fuel injection system!

Now on to the question of the primary filter element!

The old style filter was about HALF the size of the filter housing!

There is a reason!!

It allows room for all the "junk and water" to settle out of the fuel, and not be sent on to the fuel injection pump!

There is a new style primary filter element, that is longer than the old style!

The reason for the longer length, is to make it more durable, (stronger)! It also has a better filter element than the old one!

If you have the new style, correct PRIMARY filter element, and turn it over, you should see that the actual element is the same size as the OLD element! The longer filter is hollow on the bottom to allow the room needed for the junk and water!

DO NOT use a secondary or final fuel filter in the PRIMARY housing!

If you have questions on how to access and change the primary fuel filter, ask and I will explain how to do it!

Short issue primarys filter come in 2 styles, both with the same nsn. 1 is pleated paper media and the other is a white hard porous material. The second is reusable, but use only diesel or kero to clean it. Using the wrong cleaning product will dissolve it.

Am going to change our prinmary tonight, have read the manual and the relevant posts.

Do most of you actually remove the housing base from the mounting bracket as instructed in the manual or just flip the alternator out of the way and remove the single nut that holds housing on?
Is there room to do it this way?

I just spin the housing off the base. Every so often I've had to move the alt but not everytime.

Just did the deed...I had to loosen the alt, but had BajaPower below holding the housing.
The Manual is CRAZY to say pull the base....
