what do you do to fit radials on your truck?

are the stock split rims modified, or do you use all new rims?

When the military installs them on the deuce, they use tubes and flaps!

no kidding? call me a tire dimwit, but doesn't that defeat part of the purpose of radials, is that they're tubeless? Doesn't the tube increase wear? Do they make tubes that conform to the more square profile of radials?<img src="emoticons/icon_smile_idea.gif" alt="Idea">

On split rim designs all tires use a tube. The tube conforms to the shape of the tire and does not increase wear on the tire. The advantage radials have in design is they retain their shape better in adverse conditions, thus reducing rolling resistance. Bias ply tires offer a smoother ride after traveling some distance due to the fact you need to build heat into them to knock off the flat spots from sitting.

One of these days I'll swap on the new wheels I got onto the deuce.

There are plenty of one piece, 6 hole budd wheels out there with the 6 on 8.75 pattern. Most are 20's, fewer are r22.5, but they exist.

Anyway, just a heads up. Split rims scare the beheezie out of me so they're getting the heave ho.

There are plenty of one piece, 6 hole budd wheels out there with the 6 on 8.75 pattern. Most are 20's, fewer are r22.5, but they exist.

Can the split rims be modified to be standard rims, ditch the ring part?

can the standard non directional tube tires run on non-split rims? I'm having Alex swap on a total of 11 11x20 tires but if I plan to single rear wheel it soon would it be a waste, or can the non directionals swap to any rims (non-splits)?

Um, no. I mean, you could WELD the ring on after assembly, but that's it. I actually did this on my rockcrawler, running M35 rims. <img src="emoticons/icon_smile_headbanger.gif" alt="Headbanger"> Not recommended.

It sounds like someone needs to go to some junkyards. Call around, see who has cheap rims, and then go.

Split rims are realy not all that dangerous if you KNOW WHAT YOU ARE DOING. yes they do come apart during or after assembly BUT 99% of the time it is due to rust or dirt under the ring military vehicles usualy dont have rusty rims so thats always a plus i always wire brush my rings and seats then add a light coat of oil to help slow down rust. the military rims are (IMO) safer than the one other style that does exist. the militay ones have one ring and the tire compresses it so theoreticly it cant come off and others have a secondary snap ring that dosent always get seated then the ring comes off and kills you they are VERY dangerous if your not properly educated with a saftey cage. none the less be very carefull i knew a local contractor who was changing a tire one a 938 cat loader and when he turned around the ring came off and hit him in the back of the head

How wide are these rims? Why are they not already more prevalent among the Deuce masses?

wider one piece deuce rims

There have been several discussions about wider 6 hole 20's for the deuce. I started one myself. So far no one has come up another vehicle that uses the same bolt circle 20 or 22.5 in a rim width wider than 8 inches. I would prefer tubless one piece or bolt together but have not found it in a wider rim. Several companies will make them for you. Stazworks, usa6x6, Stockton, and a guy in Denver will do it with your centers.
If anyone knows what trucks used this bolt pattern in a wider single on any style rim please let us know. I have had no success in the junkyards around here. Lots of trucks with the same pattern but all were the same width or narrower.

I agree yorkgulch. If we could get one of these wheel makers to come up with a standard bolt together 20"x10" wheel of good quality and keep the price down I'm sure this site alone would send lot's of business his way. Plus most will need more than just four so the quantity could help to make them a profit while keeping the total down for us. You can have them made for $375.00 or so a piece, but I would be much more interested if they could at least get them under $300.00.

I just read about adapter plates this thread: http://www.steelsoldiers.com/index.php?name=PNphpBB2&file=viewtopic&t=3224. They might be the best way to step up to wider wheels. I think the price is too steep from there but if I can come up with measurements I think the local machine shops could come up with something for me for far less. Then you would just need the studs and find some 5 ton wheels and tires. It would set all of the tires out another inch or so which I don't like but it's the best option I have seen so far. OE also sells a new hub kit to change the Rockwells from six lug to an 8 lug pattern - $300.00 a wheel though. I was thinking of asking him to make us some 10 lug versions but I think the adapter may be the better way. Plus you could easily change back to stock wheels with no more than changing wheels which might come in handy.

Has anyone had any luck with (Kelsey)Hayes Lemmertz? The Gov't orders 50,000 at a time! (every 6 months or so), you would think the economies of production would keep that cost the lowest for any rim, anywhere.
AH wheels is the 'dealer', but I've gotten nowhere since September '05. Sent my company PO's for quantities of 10-100 but those numbers are still too small for even a quote! They stock em for the Gov't, and will sell em too, can't even get a price tho.

6 lug to 10 lug wheel adapters

if someone can get me all the dimensions for the adapters shown at $500 a piece i have a buddy in a cnc macnine shop that I spoke with that may be able to get me a quote on building some of them. I would hope way cheaper.

Just a followup - I put the 22.5's on my truck a week and a half ago.

They are SICK tall. No pics yet, but they're on.

What did those rims come off of?? Are they tubless? Tell us more please!

After rereading your post I realized that your comment about the height of the 22.5's with tires being very tall really gets at what I am looking for. I really don't care if the tires are alot wider. I just want taller. Can't wait to see the pictures.

I scored them from an old Hino COE intown delivery box truck, DRW single screw. They are tubeless.
