multifuel to diesel conversion

does anyone out there know of the correct procedure to convert the multifuel to diesel only. i just bought a new truck and the previous owner said he converted it. he said all you do is bypass the fuel density portion of the injection pump. it looks as though two portions of the injection pump are looped to themselves. is this right? are there any adjustments to be made? i read that there was an article in mv magazine on how to do it. any links?

well, I had a link to an article that showed the procedure but forgot to bookmark it before they took it down. BUT, I have the article saved and can e-mail it? Well, it's more of a step by step list than an article, but......

By bypassing the FDC (fuel density compensator), it is supposed to provide better performance!

More power, smoother running engine. The only disadvantage you can only run #2 diesel which that's what most of us run anyway. I like all the fools who think they can run straight gasoline in a multifuel...they usually learn the hard way.

Ken ran a five gallon mix. He had some residual diesel in the bottom and added only enough gas to get him to a diesel pump. He said the engine ran like crap, but it did run.

You know Brent, 5 gallons plus a residual amont may not be enough fuel if there is any sloshing at all. The in-tank pump needs a constant 1 to 2 inch depth of fuel , which is about 5 to 10 gallons. Sloshing may cause the engine to run rough. It pumps about 2 to 3 gallons/minute when running, so supply could have been a problem. The FDC is calibrated for gasoline and runs way open when sensed.
Gasoline is considered an emergency fuel in the manual not an alternate.

One other thing, Lee, if the FDC has not been in operation for a long time, it
would be a good idea to take it off and make sure the fuel stop block moves smoothly
up and down.

ok, ill have to try and decide if this is more work than i can handle, or if im creating more problems.

if im not mistaken mine looks like the top pic. so in trying to make it look like the bottom, i need to connect to what area on the bottom pic.

is removal of the FDC going to cause timing issues? or any other problems?

It was 25 gallons of gas. And it ran like CRAP! But it did run and it got me to a bigger town where i could get diesel. I don't think runnig gas is a good idea but it will work. As far as advantages to diesel only? We've had a few fire trucks in our fleet that were converted. I could NOT tell a difference in performance, or drivability. Mabye they are smoother up north where it's colder? Lee, i highly recomend going back to multifuel. Your right, when we get these storms options are a advantage. After rita diesel was scarce. If you ever find your self running gas i sudjest mixing some 2-stroke oil with it. How much? As much as it takes to smooth the engine out.

Thanks Ken. I forgot just how much fuel you told me you lugged back to the truck. I remember you saying it was way too F#*$&@! heavy :D !
