gmc 2.5 ton axles

the 2.5 ton steering axle in my bogger needed numerous parts its a 6.17 fine spline 6 lug unit.well i found another axle that looks the same but upon disassembly i realized it is not the same it has 10 spline shafts that are 1/8"smaller in diameter & its a 6.72 ring & pinion & its about 8" narrower than my other axle.the bolt pattern is 6 lug.i was hoping someone might know what this new axle is & maybe someone needs it thanks

Sounds like it's from a WWII GMC with banjo axles. That is the only other axle made with the familiar tic tac toe pattern on the cover.

would that explain the 6.72 ratio thanks

i think you are right about the banjo style axle i thought it was 6.72 ratio but it is 6.66 which is what the WWII axle was
