i had to remove my radiator for repair, so i thought now would be a good time to replace some hard to get at parts on my motor. i got the belts for my alternator off, but i cant see any adjusters for the compressor to remove its belt. how does the belt come off?
also i need to replace coolant. what kind should i use and how should i mix it with water, 50/50 or differently?

Are you ready for this? If you can handle the radiator and any other semi tuff jobs then you can probably do this. Being that the local Snap on and Matco do not have tools for this. The military did but for some reason no one has found any yet. What my husband did was to get 2 big water pump pliers that spreads out about 4 inches. You have 2 9/16 bolts on the front pulley. Loosen those up. That releases the pulley off the half pulley (split pulley system) use the pliers one on backside of pulley and one on the front (one on front is hard to grab. You neeed 4 to 5 inches because it is not perfectly squared). Hold the back pulley with 1 set of pliers and turn the fron half pulley (I think it is counterclockwise). If yours has been on a while and has not been serviced it may be stuck. You have to tap it with a big punch around near the bolts (do not take bolts out completely). This should jar it loose on the half pulley shaft (which is threaded). To tighten is reverse procedure. Check after running it may loosen up. Good Luck. Keep on Deucing.

As for your coolant whatever you are comfortable with as far as major brands. I think the stuff we used is silicone based and the mixture is 50/50. If it has been in a while you may want to flush it till water runs clear. Hope this helps.

Split pulley is on the compressor. Loosen the 2 bolts on the pulley and then they spin apart (or together). I have seen several pulley wrenches on Ebay. I guy on the MV List made up a bunch of nice ones a couple of years ago and offered them for sale. I got one and didn't use until recently. Man, what a difference makes having the right tool. They were like $40. The gys name is John Sousa!
