deuce winch ratings- what's the scoop?

so if a deuce winch is rated at 10,000 pounds, can it really pull a deuce out? Does the military underrate everything for safe measure? Or is it intended to rescue other vehicles? I was always told you need a winch rated at twice the vehicle weight to get out of tough situations.

what's the stuckest (new word) you've ever had a winch pull you out of? Just trying to decide if the upgrade is worth the extra cost and weight in the front if it's not really meant to pull the deuce out of harm's way

Given enough time and manpower the deuce winch can free the most stuck deuce. It is a self recovery tool and used correctly works flawlessly. Use the rating as a guide. Better yet, find a copy of FM20-22. This is a recovery and field expedient manual that has a wealth of info including estimating force necessary to free stuck vehicles. The deuce winch is probably underrated but correct use of 2,3 and maybe even 4 part lines will give you gobs of recovery power. If none of this leans you towards a deuce winch, consider the AWE factor. They just look mean as heck! My tractor didn't have one when I got it (as seen in my links) but it sure does now! Plenty Cool!

in my TM theres a section on winch testing and adjustment. it has a drawing of the winch drum if you were able to see it from the side and shows how much it will pull at the given amount of cable on the drum. at full wrap the winch is capable of only about 8,900# before the shear pin lets loose. at only one wrap of cable it will pull just over 18,000#. its amazing how much the leverage of wrapped cable affects load ratings.
as for the worst stuck i have ever seen? we pulled a ford with deuce rears and 62 inch tall tractor tires out of a clay hole with no problem. we also have gotten deuces stuck in holes. my friend rob was stuck in his and tied up to a tree. he was drunk and had the truck in reverse and still pulled himself out with the winch. it was pretty funny to see it happen.
also does anybody have a problem of the winch driveshaft hitting on the radiator bottom when the truck is on an uneven surface?

thats a tuff little guy up there! i had my bumper sitting on the ground with water over the winch, and i got a 3 inch lift with 16.00 20's, it drug it UP and then out on a single line last wrap. be very carefull however i did manage to twist the frame. very easy to straiten but the idea kinda bothers me. i would go invest in a snachblock (or 2 or 3) and cable clamps right away. learn how to brade loops in cable as well. the old rotton cables are very weak and tend to break at the critical point

HRD;
Critical point or critical moment? We were using one to get a Ford LTD out of the river banks here on the wabash and the cable let loose just as the car started to make solid ground (oops). You could hear the cable whip through the air. Thank God no one was in its path. The tree it hit was sliced in two. The running joke was we went to get a car and got a tree instead!
