Hi-Lift jack under axles?

I have to decide between lugging a 3-ton floor jack or a Hi-Lift up there (or does the deuce come with its own jack?)

does a 48" Hi-Lift fit under the axles and still clear the underbody? Looks like it probably would.

[3]I keep a 12 ton bottle jack and some 4X6 cribbing blocks with my truck. I've found the bigger jack makes it easier to jack up both rear axles on one side lifting on the walking beam where the spring mounts are. I have the BII jack but find the storebought 12 ton is more practical for everyday use. Oh yeah, on basic stuff to bring we might have overlooked a good tire chock or two. Whenever I travel with my trucks they always go with me. [/3]

R 4X4 has it right. Get a 12 ton jack for these Deuces. Remember, they're overengineered. So you need a jack that is more powerful than the truck is heavy to be sure you can change a tire or whatever. I too have a BII kit in the truck but prefer my 12 ton jack in normal use.

Good point on the bigger jack. The BII jack is pretty useless, just wanted to say that a bottle jack is probably easiest kept with the truck. R 4x4 brought up a good point on the wheel chocks too. I keep mine stowed on top of the fuel tank between the edge of the tank and frame rail. Having them on the right side of the vehicle also forces you to walk around the vehicle which you should always do anyway to check things out. Chocks are a darn good idea, when properly adjusted these parking brakes work pretty well...however, stuff happens...that's all we need is someones big ugly Army truck rolling into mr or mrs treehugger's Escalade at the fuel stop. That could put a hurtin' on this hobby of ours and we need to protect it in every way we can.

[3]Resident deuce expert and MV authority David Doyle has some stories about a runaway deuce. I know I've had the occasion of sliding out of my truck and knocking the e-brake lever to the off position. Also consider that curious Joe or his notso bright offspring could easily reach in there and knock it forward causing problems. I've often thought of modifing that handle to put a padlock on it but never have. Maybe now is the time! [/3]

we did something similar for our t-bucket- there's no locking column and you can easily hotwire it, but we have a quick disconnect steering wheel and a padlock running through our gearshifter so they can get it out of park (well, unless they crawl under and disconnect the linkage but thieves aren't that smart now are they?)

[4]Hey Lance, that brings up another security thought you may not be aware of. The military secures their vehicles by welding a chain somewhere in the cab and locking it around the steering column. Check with Alex and make sure that there is a chain on it. You can pack your own padlock along to secure it. Never know when you might want to patronize a food establishment and want to secure the new toy. OOf, I just thought of one more important issue. Did we concur that the truck has a sprag transfer case? If in fact it does have that case, taking off the front flanges would be useless unless you remove the front driveshaft. Confirm which case it has when you talk to Alex. Removing that front driveshaft is still much easier that the interaxle shaft, a bunch easier![/4]

That's another good point, I've had people try to open up my trucks and such "I drove these back when I was in the Army" Man nothing ticks me off worse, if it ain't yours don't touch it. What kind of parents raised you I had one guy try to unlock my M1009...surprised him to find out I had changed the locks
When you get the truck Lance I'd be more than happy to come up and give you any help you might need with the truck. I'll be up there the weekend of the Hilton gun show.

Guys;
I use the "Truck Club" and wrap the chain around the club for a little extra deterrent. Plus I take the starter button with me and shut off power to the batteries too.
