oval or round gpw muffler

I have a 42 gpw jeep and am going to put a new exhaust system on it, what is the correct muffler for it, round or oval

Depends on when it was built. The change happened in July 1942 according to this thread: G503.com Message Forums • View topic - Time line round muffler replacement?

Also, you might look and see if your jeep still has any brackets on the bottom side of the body. The round muffler had larger (3"-4" in diameter) clamps that went around the muffler. The later oval muffler had smaller clamps (1 1/2" diameter) that just went around the pipe forward and aft of the muffler if I remember correctly... Good luck!

I check on my list and the oval muffler begin in ffirst day of may 1942,
with the new back fixation.

thanks, got on G503 and submitted the jeep numbers and found out it is actually a D-Day Jeep built in June 44.

Cool, my dad has a '44 GPW as well.
