body number should be on a plate behind the passenger seat on the rear wheel well area, but inside the tub. Also located on front bumper horn...

Sorry Bikeman, not correct. GPW's S/N is stamped on the glovebox door on the main data plate, and on the top of the frame, on the driver's side, under the hood, to the rear of the shock mount. The Willys MB's had the S/N on the frame horn, and M38's /A1's behind the seat like you said. If your GPW has a round front crossmember under the radiator, you have a Willys frame.

You are correct, I'm thinking of the M38 (mine) forgot it doesn't translate to the earlier ones.
