I have a Carter M2090 style fuel pump that has the glass bowl attached. Is there supposed to be a filter element that goes in there? If not, whats the purpose of the bowl? Sediment or something? I have searched and searched and have not seen one picture with an element inside the bowl.

No element that I know of.
There should be a screen at the top.

That is a civilian pump and there was another glass bowl with filter at the Carb.
Earlier carbs had a element inside the carb., later carbs. had the bowl.

The correct M37 pump was a dual action pump, meaning pumped fuel and Vacuum
To assist the wipers.
Also had a primer lever to manually pump fuel.

The fuel filter was ahead of the pump inline at the firewall or in the tank.

The pump you pictured will work , but is not the correct pump.

Later or trucks that went through the rebuild in the 60's, they got rid of the filter on the firewall. There should be a filter in the fuel tank on the pickup tube.

Lots of folks add an additional filter inline before the carb just to keep trash from these old system out of the carby.

Yes, I still have the firewall filter as well as the intank filter. My tank was completely rusted out so I'm going through the entire fuel system to get her back up and running.
