Crew Cab LMTV

New here, but can't find anything coming up in the search. Looking at an LMTV for an overlander. (also F750, c7500 etc). I need 4 seats though. I'm SURE it has been discussed and I can't find it. Has anyone extended the cab on an LMTV? You'd need to remove the airbox and spare - make it a Steyr basically. I can think of a couple other immediate issues, mainly the cab tilt, but surely someone has done it already? Poor photoshop job, but something like the attached.

North Carolina - FINALLY !
Neat. If you started with a 6x6 for the longer frame, you could put a shorter LMTV bed on, move the spare/air cleaner back and have an additional 2’ of cab added with little trouble it would seem. Additionally could convert to single rear drive (sort of like a bob but without actually shortening the truck.

Hmm.

I did think about that as well, since I'm not concerned about having a huge payload, getting rid of the middle axle on a 6x6, converting it to 4x4, would be doable...probably

The idea has been kicked around. As you said the cab lift system, the air-ride system, the cab leveling system, and the cab latching system all need to be addressed. I'm not aware of anyone that actually done it though. Like a lot of major mods, you'll have to re-engineer a good deal. Gluing a chunk of another cab onto the back is the simple part.

IMHO it is not worth the trade offs. Build your camper box with transportation seats, and way to view the outside (can be even be cameras to their tablets or projected onto wall to appear as a window). Also communication system to the cab.

1. Kids just play games on their tablets anyway while in transport.
2. by NOT doing doka cab (dual cab) you have significantly more camper space where you live when using the rig. Riding to the destination and back is just temporary while where you "live" (inside camper) needs to feel livable. With doka it will be cramped and uncomfortable.
3. these cabs are known to crush easy. Your loved ones are safer in a strong box anyway.

these suggestions coming from a fella who traveled in a motorhome camper a lot in his childhood. Out of three kids, I was the only one who wanted to see out the windshield. Also lived in them thru undergrad, grad school, and few years beyond.

I agree, except for the camera thing. Windows can be replaced with cameras. The technology is not there.

My plan is to use jump seats in the back of the standard cab and have them aiming toward the middle of the truck, then using the camper for the rest of my transport needs.

A European company does this.
on this one it does not add more seats compared to what folk in here area already doing w/out doka conversion.... it only makes them more comfortable. It's actually less seating that what some have done w/out Doka conversion....... though most folk's 3+ seats are cramped for adults but fine for kids which is their intent.

disadvantage is you can't use the space where our spare tire is for more camper space..... cause it takes that up.... though one can weld on that lost space to the rear of the truck and build camper box backward instead of forward. which is more fabrication thus money. But if your pockets have it.... go for it

So it has been done! Good to know. Yes I have read about these being, not the safest, in a roll over. My thought being, just build the box on the back extra stout towards the front - essentially becomes a roll bar.

Having the extra pax riding in the box isn't an option. We had a skoolie and we did it that way- we learned we want real seats where we're all together.

The heavy lift cab option is a good idea to overcome the leverage/weight.

Thanks for the replies fellas

extra stoute is not going to handle 20,000lb truck by time add camper. Now if you also build camper box similar to an ambulance (2" square tube frame on one foot centers) then the two together might can act like a ROP for Cab.

My wording was poor. I meant building camper box extra stout. Especially closer to the cab. But yeah 20k lbs is a lot to protect against!

I see your avatar pic has some sort of ROP build on it. Any details on it?
its for sale :D Southern OH. It is made out of chassis rail that use to sit below the bed. I was going to add a piece to the top to raise overall height above the cab a few inches... then maybe cage with flexible mounts to front of truck chassis similar to how Trials trucks do exo cages. But then ended up with an Ambulance box and feel that the construction of the box offers just as much.... if not more ROP than the one Fabbed from chassis rail so took it off
