What do I do with this motor?

First, I'll introduce myself. My name is Chuck and I live in NW Arkansas. I just bought a 1988 M925 that has been converted to a dump bed. The truck runs fine and the motor powering it sounds good and appears solid.

An additional motor came with the truck, bolted to a steel crate. It appears to me, (but I'd like your opinion), to be a remanufactured crate motor Cummins. The tag on the motor shows Date of Mfg to be 1-84. It's a model NHC-250. The engine number per the tag is 111476818. All of the engine openings (exhaust ports, intake, bolt holes, etc, have been plugged. The engine looks complete.

The crate looks to be 1/4" steel. It is HEAVY. According to the Cummins site, the motor alone weighs 1,500 lbs. With the crate I can attest it is at least 3,100 lbs because that's where my mini ex maxes out.

My question is this; do you think it is a remanufactured or refreshed crate motor? Would you keep it or sell it? If you sold it, what is the big old beast worth if it runs?

Thanks in advance.

Welcome. Your engine could be factory new, depot rebuilt, or an engine that was pulled out of a truck due to a fatal flaw. Paint on the engine usually tells the tale. Bright fasteners means new, all black paint everywhere is rebuilt, all black but evidence of being installed means dead. But then of course, some civilian could have parted out a running truck and put the engine in your can.

Any idea what to do with it. I need to get it out of the back of the truck and would prefer not to store it? I don't really want to spend a lot to get it going or verified as a good engine. On the other hand, I'd hate to sell a good motor at scrap rates.

These engines are dying right and left these days. Every week or so someone comes on here telling us their 250 sounds “like a bucket of rocks”. Take out a classified ad on here and sell it.

You need to open it up and post pictures. Running small cam engines are in the 700 for used to 1200 rebuilt range. Also varies on if its an 809 or 939 engine

I hope the pics are helpful. If there are specific shots to help identify it, please let me know. I‘m pretty sure I will sell it, and cheap. I just need to have a mechanic check out the motor in the truck to ensure the sounds I’m hearing are normal and I won’t need the crate motor any time soon. I sure love the big old beast truck.

For what you paid for it, try to get a drain oil sample, seal it up with dessicant and stow it someplace. Can it be spun as it sits? Did it come with the top of the storage shipping container?
You may need this stuff one day and for what you paid it will pay for itself with just a few parts. Just put it in that shed in the photos while you go see what a rebuilt one or running one costs$

I appreciate the good advice. I didn’t know where to start. The first thing I need to do is find someone with a big skid steer with forks to get it out of the truck. I need to use the truck pretty bad.

Yes that is what happened to me. I had a 4 ton shaper in the truck, then when I got it home I had no way to get it off the truck. I wanted that Deuce more than the Shaper.
All those that said they wanted it "changed their minds".

You could drive the whole thing to a fork truck and pay a bit to re-deliver it to you but you just might not want to give it up for cheap as thats a lot of parts there.
