New M1009 - Few Questions

Well I finally went ahead and purchased a M1009 - a 1986 with 49,000 miles. My boys and I are going to fix it up and treat it like a father and son project. In any event, we are going to start with the simple fluid/filter changes and progress from there.

The vehicle is in decent running/driving shape but does have a few querks that I am interested in chasing down before I feel it is ready for the road.

1. The vehicle idles nicely when first started (engine warm) but then idles high as soon as the throttle is touched the first time. The fast idle solenoid has power and is holding the throttle arm open. Is this normal on a warm engine? Is there a temperature switch that controls the operation of the fast idle solenoid and could it be bad, causing this issue?

2. The glow plugs don't always seem to work. The wait light sometimes comes on and stays on. After repeated key on attempts, the glow plugs usually work like they are supposed to. My plan is to replace all of the glow plugs and look at the switch and wiring as a start. What does everyone recommend using in terms of glow plugs?

3. The vehicle shifts are almost imperceptible but do occur. What would cause this? I am going to closely look at all of the vacuum lines and replace accordingly. Do the vacuum pumps typically go bad on these? Could the vacuum valve itself be bad or need adjusting? I would like to firm up the shifts when driving.

4. Lastly, I want to go through the fuel system from tank to injection pump and check the screen and all hoses. I also plan on replacing the mechanical lift pump and getting the injection pump rebuilt. Who do you recommend in terms of rebuilding the injection pump? Cost? Should I plan on replacing the injectors as well?

5. Mufflers are shot and need replacing. What does everyone recommend for replacements?

Sorry for all of the questions as I am sure you have covered these subjects in the past. We are just excited to learn about this vehicle and to start work. Your help will be greatly appreciated! If anyone has any parts available, feel free to reach out to me via PM.

Best Regards, Marc

For issue # 1
Replace your cold advance temperature sensor located on passengers side rear of engine by the last fuel injector. When engine is cold it always sends power to your cold advance solenoid when the key is on. As engine warms up it opens the circuit and drops power to your cold advance solenoid. If that doesn't work you should replace your cold advance solenoid. The cold advance solenoids are no longer manufactured but there are a few vendors out there that sell them and may want to purchase one for a spare.

Thanks for the advice. I will locate a solenoid to keep on hand. With that said, I just ordered a new thermal switch from the local parts store (Borg Warner equivalent of the AC Delco) - wasn't too bad at $60 compared to what I saw on the net for prices. Any advice on the other issues?

Some news to report, my son and I drained the coolant system and got the fast idle temp switch replaced. Flushed the coolant system and drained a 2nd time. Cleaned the overflow tank and re-installed. Filled with fresh Prestone green and distilled water. Fast idle/IP advance now works as it should!

Would you post a part# for the Borg Wagner solenoid and where you ordered from?

As requested by ezgn, the Borg Warner fast idle thermal switch is BWD WT7266. I purchased it at the local Carquest (Advanced Auto) for just under $74. That included tax along with $6 to ship it from Kansas to Michigan.
