DON’T DELAY! Please contact the Senate Transportation, Public Utilities, Energy, and Technology Committee to request support for S.B. 77:

You may use the following points in your message:

  • S.B. 77 allows for the exemption from the requirement to display a license plate on the exterior of a military vehicle if the license plate is inside the vehicle and ready for inspection by law enforcement upon request.
  • S.B. 77 defines a military vehicle as a vehicle of any size or weight that was manufactured for use by armed forces and that is maintained in a condition that represents the vehicle’s military design and markings regardless of current ownership or use.
  • S.B. 77 protects the aesthetic contours of military vehicles and recognizes the important historical and patriotic purpose of these vehicles.
  • S.B. 77 acknowledges that military vehicles are becoming valued collectors’ items among the automotive community.
Overview: Utah has introduced SAN-supported legislation (S.B. 77) to allow for the exemption from the requirement to display a license plate on the exterior of a military vehicle. To qualify, the license plate would have to be carried inside the vehicle and ready for inspection by law enforcement upon request. Currently, all vehicles must display two license plates at all times. This bill currently awaits consideration in the Senate Transportation, Public Utilities, Energy, and Technology Committee.

If I read correctly Ohio also allows this. We can remove and keep our plates in the vehicle, while only painting/stenciling the tag number on the vehicle. Then it appears as “original” military tagging with no need to display the actual plate

I got stopped in 2019 for no plate. Once I showed the state statue, my plate, proof of insurance and registration, all was well.

A copy of the state statue helped minimizing any confusion for the seasoned LEO.
Louisiana doesn't issue plates for historic MVs, only requiring stenciling. I carry a copy of the law in the truck too!
