Oil bath air filter. We always put used oil in it, because it was a waste of money to put new oil in it. Sometimes, like in summer, we had to use a putty knife to get the oil out. It was almost as hard as soft ice cream. The battery charging generator, was a beast. Heavy, and a pain in the butt...

    Correct.

I would not call timing an issue. But adjusting the IP's sure don't hurt.

Do any of you remember who wanted to make a M1078, (I think) cargo bed out of alu? He wanted the cad drawing for the bed.

Stuck Voltage Reconnection Switch on MEP-803A

Here is a tip. Look around in the bottom of the set, in dark corners and where you would never look. Sometimes you can find these errant pieces. Knobs and things can still be there. Just got to look. The problem with taking things apart, "just to look at them" is a two sided sword. Long ago, I...

Stuck Voltage Reconnection Switch on MEP-803A

If your life hung in the balance, of turning that switch with no knob, you would be history. The S8 switch has some heavy duty spring action on it. Why? Because if contacts were weak, they can chatter. If that happens, there will be arcing. If that happens, there will be heat. If that happens...

    MEP 803A Overheating

Ray hit all the questions that should have been asked at the top of the page. Before you assume anything, TEST, TEST, TEST. Read the TM. Get smart. You may not have a problem at all, if you put in a 12 volt meter, in a 24 volt system.

I got about half a mind to get in my car and come visit. Its not far to you. But right now, that is not an option.

This is just a guess, but it could be to switch from 50 to 60 hertz. I have asked two old farts if hey may have this TM. Both said no, but would ask around. How about shots of the inside of the set, when the light is right. Please keep in mind, its been almost 47-48 years since I saw this set last.

    MEP-803A :: A few questions

I never worried about the springs. If we had new ones, we put them in. but never held a job up waiting on them. Fuel lines. Do they leak, seep, weep? But if you take the front end off, do the fuel lines. Much easier to get at, and you will not have to ever worry about it for a long time...

I normally removed the radiator and front housing all in one piece. That way I could clean UNDER the tank also.

Most of the guys in the forum use a thermal gun, to read the heat output of the cylinders. If one is hotter then the other, you can loosen the IP for that injector, and turn the IP left or right to adjust the output of fuel to the hot cylinder. If one jug is hotter then the other, its working...

    802 wiring question

Weeeeeeeeeeeel, yes and no. You can take the top part of the P6/J6 apart. The pins can be removed and replaced I did it one time, and vowed to never do it again. It was a job for someone who has fingers not the size of a coke bottle.

The "Emergency Switch". The switch under the red switch guard. There are a few safety circuits in the set. When they turn on, you can not put out power, or keep the set running. They are there to protect the gen set from killing someone, or destroying itself. BUT, In a war time environment...

All military gen sets that are "water cooled" run at 180-200 degrees. First get everything fixed, then we can try and suggest a few things to look at concerning vibrations. There is not much to be done, but a few things to check.

    Airbags for genset mounts

Want to add a note here. When bolting it down you should also isolate the bolts, don't crank them down tight onto the frame. Try longer bolts with a rubber shock absorber mount and steel washer under the head and nut If you do this, and I think its a good idea, but if you do this, there is...

803A smoking and surge after warm up

I would say Ray's # 31 post is the next step. I thought I would just cover the bases, that up till now haven't been covered. If fuel pressure to the IP's is good, and the injectors pop off, the L5 is rock steady, linkage is adjusted right, then what do you have left? The governor.

803A smoking and surge after warm up

I haven't jumped in here till now. Just reading the threads. Is the throttle linkage set right? Is the L5, Fuel solenoid also moving? Or just the engine hunting, with no movement of the linkage?
