I have a rear hub off my A3 for the first time on the account of gear oil coming out of the hollow stud. The outer bearing came out fine and the hub and drum slid off - it's a lot heavier than it looks! Anyway I was hoping the inner bearing would just come out, but it's actually driven in? I...
I'm curious - how could oil get into the cylinders like that? Maybe someone was running it on some kind of oil and created a hydrolock condition? Or someone intentionally filled them with oil in an effort to preserve the motor while it was just sitting?
Surely that much oil doesn't just sit...
I'm thankful that my truck was titled after being auctioned off to its first private owner - a green AM General pickup ;) I registered the truck as historical and treat it as such.
My floor looked a little bit nicer underneath - just surface rust fortunately! One of these days I'll paint it. I don't take it out much and when I do it's during the summer as my "summer car" so it won't get rusty too fast :)
Out of curiosity, what's your truck's S/N?
They supposedly existed according to the parts TM. I attached 10 pages of the parts TM PDF including all parts of the winterization kits. I have no idea how easy-to-find these kits are considering not many A3s were built compared to the rest of the series. I've been lead to believe it's hard...
@fungus glad you got yourself a truck - looks nice!
Weird things happen to these trucks whether it's before or after service. My dad's 1953 M37 came home from Fort Drum with three-tone NATO woodland camo. There's evidence it came from the factory with a winch, but it came home winchless with...
That looks sharp! I never thought about using a radiator hose for that. That could be a replacement for the entire duct/hose from the steering assist unit
Once you get the exhaust system squared away you should be able to ride comfortably without hearing protection. It's my understanding that the A3 trucks are a bit quieter than the A2 trucks. My wife and I can have a conversation during a drive, though we still have to speak up - it's not a...
I think I figured out why my middle axle's seals are leaking:
This little guy is seized shut! Just as I removed it from its hole a second-long puff of air came out of the axle tube! It's held pressure this entire time! I think it's time to get a new vent.
EDIT: I just freed up the top...
Yikes - that's crazy! I believe you should be able to install a wheel weight without having to undo a clamp ring nut - just fasten with another lock nut on top of it and torque to spec... For which it actually doesn't have a spec  I've considered this in the past and think that the...
If you're going to keep the CTIS valve, I'd keep the wheel weight. However, I think the weight needs to be moved a stud CCW - it doesn't look balanced. I think the TM section for tire maintenance shows it that way too. On my truck each of the weights were installed in a different position, so...
Are you sure about that? The fan makes a loud WHOOSH sound when it's engaged with a noticeable breeze coming out of the front wheel wells, otherwise it just windmills. I believe if the fan clutch were to fail for some reason that it actually fails in the "Off" position instead of the "On"...
If those windshield panels are what I think they are, they may require some cutting around the gasket and maybe some redrilling of hardware holes in the frame. My dad went that route with his M37, which I believe uses the same windshield panels.
I'd consider getting them professionally fixed...
Good question. I don't see anything specified in the parts TM. Maybe @Guyfang might have a tools document. Have you tried asking at G503.com? The history guys there might know something.
Welcome to the M44A3 club! I would've kept the van box though - M109A4 trucks seem pretty rare compared to M35A3 and M35A3C trucks. But I'm in it for the history, not so much practicality (though it's a good excuse to my wife :ROFLMAO:) . Although it's nice to be able to use a 12'x8' bed to...
