I kinda wish I got my CDL before the rules changed, but at this point I think that if I can afford a tractor and some kind of lowboy I can probably afford the Federally-mandated class and maybe get something out of it 🤷♂️ But I know enough when I'm driving to not do anything stupid that would...
@msgjd perhaps you're thinking of insurance requirements? I think Hagerty frowns upon historical MVs towing trailers, but other folks in the local club seem to do it without issue.
I was recently looking at the NY DMV laws for 26000 lb+ vehicles and the State Police website mentioned something about a personal use endorsement for vehicles that big. I believe that should work for any 5-ton and maybe FMTV with historical plates. But it depends on what you want to use the...
There were two iterations of the M109 shop van on the M45A2 chassis - the M109A2 and M109A3. The M109A4 happens to be the 4th iteration of the M109 shop van but on an M44A3 ESP chassis. Crazy, huh? o_O
@rustystud I don't think most people here will hold that against you. No one's perfect after all, as much as we try to be :p I value your experience and anyone else's when it comes to transmissions.
I've never taken one apart farther than the shift tower, and barely understand how...
My dad can do that, though he's been a trucker all his life!
My first daily drivers both had a 5-speed manual transmission. I learned stick on a 1999 Wrangler Sport with the 4.0L and drove a 2005 Toyota Corolla with a 5-speed stick for awhile. In addition I've driven a few pieces of green iron...
To be fair folks here have adapted the 5-ton hydraulic power steering to the deuce. I wouldn't have expected air-assisted from the factory instead of hydraulic but AM General seemed to think it was a good idea for the ESP.
The stock air assist on my truck doesn't squeal when I hit the stops, but YMMV.
For those unfamiliar, I have audio of my truck that includes multiple gear shifts with a 1545 running 15W-40. There's some whining consistent with automatic transmissions of all kinds. Start at 2:30 to hear it...
Every time I'm under the truck draining the air tanks I look at backing plate of each wheel and the rim for evidence of leaking brake fluid. While driving leave enough stopping distance in front of me in case I have a problem or the driver in front of me has one. And when I see a stop sign or...
How can you tell what your truck was rebuilt from? I haven't found any other stamped serial numbers besides the A3 one on the frame under the driverside fender.
I read a report that the ESP did save the DOD some money compared to buying more LMTVs, but they bought more LMTVs anyway so I guess...
You'll definitely find more A2s than A3s. Only about 5800 A3 deuces were built across four variants. Anecdotal evidence shows that the M36A3 is probably the rarest of the A3 trucks, with M109A4 just behind that. I'm not sure what the breakdown is between the dropside and non-dropside M35A3s...
The coolant in my truck is mostly original. It should probably be flushed, but I plan on doing that whenever I get around to repairing the leaky heater core.
Because of the leaky heater core, the truck lost coolant on the passenger-side floor, so I had to add about two gallons of the red...
I'm not familiar with brake system design for any kind of brakes, but I know that hydraulic systems can be under some high pressures sometimes, like thousands of psi. I'm hoping there's someone here who's more knowledgeable about that who can chime in.
I'd think off-the-shelf springs of the...
If a crash happens because of it Dorman better have deep enough pockets for lawyers.
Brake cylinder boots aren't load-bearing, right? One could make a mold and cast reproduction ones out of an appropriate rubber.
As for the brake cylinders, they can be reverse-engineered and milled out in a...
Fortunately AT545 transmissions seem plentiful and the TMs cover that replacement in detail.
I think it would be neat to pull the old transmission apart to see the wrecked clutch disks.
