When we got ours, they were natural. The metal bits were just oiled, unless someone really pissed off the Transport Sgt. In which case, they got scrubbed down to bare metal, and were given several coats of the flavor of the day paint. They were kept busy for atleast 2 days!
Sorry Clinto, that was an overhead storage rack. Up here, all trucks came with a hard top, due to the winter weather. The troops got used to storing the Cam Nets up there, and usually thought that the roof would make an excellent veiwing point, while watching anything cool that was happening...
Up here, alot of the fish boats ran Jimmies. Needless to say, they had way too many hours on them, and the internals were looser than a goose. SOP was to keep a 5lb CO2 extinguisher near the intake, and when it started to grenade, dump the entire thing. It always worked.
BYW DO NOT use Dry...
They were a good truck, and I drove more than my share of them. We refered to them as a 5 Quad....5/4 ton. They were real thirsty on gas, but ran very reliably.
My only beef was that the skid plate bolts sheared off (to my way of thinking) easily. Somewhere up behind Camp Vernon, there is a...
Thanks, I wasn't trying to be snarky, and Yes there are many simple ways to check things. I have found that the manuals give me the base info that I need, and they have saved me from a few (but not all), costly repairs. I can be almost as stubborn as a cranky truck!
OK, I missed out on that one, what's it all about? Scepter makes replacement packs, and they can be ordered from any NAPA store.

If you are really stuck, Canadian Tire.com can order and ship them as well.
1) Engage the front diff. Crank the streeing wheel hard left or right. Apply forward power. Do you feel any binding or hopping? You are locked in!
2) RTFM... Read The Freaking Manual! (Please)
3) Yes, you can engage at lower speed, on the move.
4) Rather than putting a WRENCH on the...
Correct me if I'm wrong, but I believe that if you put LED lights on it, you're good from 10V to ~48V. Just splice in a civvy connector, and you're good to go.
Before you get yourself all wound up, go talk to the Fire Dept. Find out if they actually own the truck, or is it on loan. If they own it, you are cool. If it is on loan, you will have to take your chances, by bidding on it on GL. Good luck. I hope that you get it!
Snap a picture of the data plate (by the glove box). That will give you a better idea of what you are looking at. Maybe we can give you a more informed opinion then.
You have a bunch of reading to do. TMs are located in the resource section. They can be big and take some time to download, but they are worth their weight in gold!
Very similar, but much less fun after a few beers!
One will find ways to get you stuck, and the other, if operated correctly may get you unstuck.... Unless the truck belongs to Frodo!
