Here's my setup that Guyfang, I believe is talking about. I took one gen, off and added a 250 fuel tank. I then built a spider cart to move where it's needed and can be stored for transport.

Sorry, it's not handy for me to measure right now, but if you look at the above picture it's not much bigger than the dia. of the hub.

The plate is 1/4" and I'm not sure how much we removed from the hub. I would take just enough for a good flat area.

Here's where I cut the axle down @ 4 1/2" each side.

The magnet now has a large flat surface to grab and everything is good. Here's some other mods I did to the tongue, getting rid of the tilting feature in the process. You can see the tires are tucked up under the body and I still have the A3 axle bump for good ground clearance.

So, I machined the hub down flat and made a rotor to mount on the back of the hub, drilled and tapped four mounting holes, so the new rotor (plate steel) mounts to the hub. With the new surface the magnet has a large area to grab to.

Porkysplace, The brake shoes are mounted on the backing with the magnet in front of them then the drum with hub is mounted so the magnet can grab it. On the military axle the hub and drum are separate so there is no area for the magnet to grab to. Brand new brakes.

Hello Everyone, I converted a M101A3 axle over to electric, but having a problem with the magnet holding to the surface of the military hub. I used the military hub and drum with the electric backing plate with shoes, etc. I can't find a new drum and hub combo that will fit over the military...

Just a heads up....those brakes are not self adjusting, you will have to do it.

In my opinion, there's a lot of reasons to go electric. I built mine for off road camping and surge brakes can be a pain in the azz off road. Weight is another concern, it adds up. That statement about how wonderful surge brakes are when properly maintained is always thrown out there, but in...

I agree with Marcus, having the parking brakes working helps a lot, just grab a handle when pushing or pulling and you have it secured. If you plan to use it in different types of terrain they will come in handy. Chocks will work, but somewhat of a hassle. I didn't want to seem like I was...

Buffalo, There is no difference in the A2 and A3 hubs, brakes, backing plates, etc. The main difference is the axle width and the bump up in the middle.
