    Good bye for now

Hey everyone, Well, it was a little over 15 months ago that the to be later named "Bio-Beast" became a part of our motor-pool when my oldest son bought her. I owned her myself for nearly the last 12 months. However, that all ended yesterday when she went to live with Carpenter and his wife...

What is the largest diameter wheel that fits a M1009

An off-road vehicle is only as tall as it's lowest point, so I want my differentials as high off the ground as possible. My thinking was that the only way to do that is run the largest diameter wheel(and tire?) as possible. I currently have a 2" suspension lift with 33x12.5x15 tires. Suggestions?

    First trip to Durhamtown

I can't make it to the 2011 GA rally this week, so my youngest son and I went to Durhamtown Plantation for the first time this past Saturday. Two works - LOVED IT! We did get off to a rough start though. Within 10 minutes of getting on the first trail we were up to the hubs in that red...

Is there a "normal" glow plug cycle time?

Long story short: Mechanic says all the glow plugs, and their connections, are good. Mechanic repaired a broken wire to, and replaced a defective, relay. Mechanic says the wait light, and therefore the glow plugs, stay on too long the first cycle of the day and I should replaced the GPM. My...

    Removing fuse box/panel

I did check the TM and previous threads first, but I didn't find the answer to my question - Can you remove the fuse box/panel on a M1009? If so, what are the steps? A previous owner really had the fuse box/panel under the left side of the steeing wheel all rigged up. I pulled out all his...

Help - Glow plugs don't come on!

Someone who owed my '85 M1009 before I did thought they understood automotive electrical wiring, but they didn't. I knew I didn't, so as long as everything was working, I left the spider ball of wires under my dash alone. Well, I decided that I wanted to add a 12v power outlet. I spliced into...

    Spray can bedliner on bumpers

Has anyone ever seen, or used, spray can bedliner on a CUCV bumper/grill guard? I saw it uses on the after-market bumpers of a later model Blazer on a 4x4 TV show, and it looked interesting.

    They took my baby!

It was a sad moment this morning as I watched my M1009 go onto the back of a wreaker. It's nothing terminal; it's a broken starter motor bolt and a terrible racket when I tried to crank it (didn't try long and it didn't crank). I did ask my mechanic if I could get on some kind of monthly...

Playing in the woods pic and video thread

I haven't seen an one-stop "here's my photos and/or video from my last play time in the woods", so maybe this will be the start of one. This is from this weekend. Hey, how do you post videos on here?

Change a tire in the woods jack recommendations

Hey everyone, My M1009 came to me jack-less (there is a lug wrench that may or may not fit - it came with aftermarket rims too). From what I've read, the original jacks aren't all that hot to start with. I've got a 2" lift and I'm running 33x12.50x15 tires. I looking for recommendations for a...

Going Topless in the National Forest

The title and the photos say it all. :)

    Small leak from rear transmission

Disclaimer - I'm not a mechanic, and I did do a thread search AND check the TM manuel before posting. I've got a small leak coming from my rear differential. It appears to be coming out of where the U joints meet the differential? (see circle in photo) I have been in the water lately. No...

    M43 camper mod

Has anyone done a camper mod to a M43? How does it work as a camper, and I'd love to see photos.

How do you know when to change fuel filter?

Can you tell I'm a non-mechanical newbie? I've read a lot about the importance of changing the fuel filter (especially if burning biodiesel), but how do you know when to do it unless/until the vehicle has trouble starting or running? I've only had it since January of this year, and the...

    Soft top/ hard top question

I've got an '85 M1009. If I get a Softopper or Skyler tonneau-style cover, can I still put my hard top back on. If so, how much hassle is there switching back and forth?

Lights in the grill guard - show me your pics!

Ok, I want to add some additional driving/off-road lights in my grill guard (and maybe on the back too). Let me see your set-up! Also, any suggestions on the best watts for the buck would be appreciated. :-)

Indicator lights at start-up; Bulb replacement

I thought I saw this addressed somewhere, but I can't find the post. Here's my question: Which indicator/idiot lights are supposed to light up at ignition? Right now, in the upper left hand bank all I get it Gen 1 (and my voltmeter isn't registering either). I didn't even know I had a 4WD...

    B100 in a M1009?

Hey everybody. I've been searching through this forum and I haven't seen anything on this issue in at least 3 years. I've got a "fully-warranted and EPA-registered biodiesel – meeting national ASTM quality specification D-6751" producer in my county. I bought $30.00 of B20 from them yesterday...

HELP - Newbie in over his head

Help! I've got the driver door off my '85 M1009 (unbolted door from hinges), so that I could get to the hinge pin more easily to replace the bushings. But it looks like the pin has some sort of flange on the bottom? How do I get the pin out?

    Front/Back wheel alignment

Is there a way to have the outside edges of the front and back tires line up without using spacers? I've had two different tire shop guys tell me just exactly how they feel about spacers, and it wasn't pretty. I'm currently running 33x12.50x15s, and the rear tires are flush with the top of the...
