New M1010, free parts offered, some needed

Hey y'all, just bought this cherry m1010 on Fleabay! Only 18K mi, no rust anywhere. After the usual replacement of rubber parts & fluids, along with a radiator & water pump, she is on the road. This may scandalize a few folks, but I bought it with the intention of making it into a camper (I'm...

    Weird little tube inside bellhousing???

Bought this '84 6.2 J-code motor recently, but I've never seen one with this little tube behind the flexplate before. It runs from between the oil-galley plugs to the outside of the block near the oil cooler fittings, and the end is open. Is this an air intake for the "PCV" system? If so, it...

    6.5 heads on 6.2 motor

So I just installed a set of new 6.5 heads from SSD on my '85 M1009 ($750, approx $900 shipped). Some things I noticed: 1. First, they fit with no big problems. They have a thicker flange around the exhaust ports, which moves each exhaust manifold maybe 1/4" further outboard; this was a little...

    Holy Turbocharger Meltdown!!!

Putting a turbo on my M1009 has definitely been the best mod ever, but things got a little rough this weekend. My girlfriend & I set out on a 4-hour road trip to a camping party. We were about 2 hours into it on I-86, with the truck loaded to the ceilling with our camping gear, pulling a 4X8...

Caution regarding Walbro electric fuel pumps

I've been running a Walbro FRB-22 (similar to FRB-5) electric fuel pump for 3 years now. In general I'm happy with it (self-priming, biodiesel compatible, pumps only on demand, built-in cleanable pre-filter). But for anyone thinking of getting one, they do have one major design flaw: The pump...

Dual front battery install w/ pix

For anyone who wants to shoe-horn a couple group 35 truck batteries under the hood instead of the giant 6TL batts, here's the setup I came up with. The whole thing is made out of recycled box-spring mattress frame channel (1.5" sq L-channel). It attaches with (3) bolts thru the pass. inner...

Detroit Locker install in GM 14-bolt w/ pix

Ok so I realize most of you running a GM 14-bolt rear axle already HAVE a Detroit Locker, but when I swapped civilian 8-lug axles (with 4.10 gears) into my M1009, I was stuck with an open differential in the rear. Fortunately the Detroit Locker can be installed inside the open carrier of the GM...

Cylinder Heads International -- RUN AWAY!!!

I see several people are shopping for cylinder heads right now, so it's time for me to post my recent disastrous experience with Cylinder Heads International, a seemingly reputable head-rebuild service on FleaBay. The deal was $590 with shipping for a pair of rebuilt 6.2 heads, with pre-paid...

New cylinder heads, and compression goes DOWN?!

AARGH! So just replaced both heads with rebuilt exchanges. With the old heads the compression test results were all 300-360 psi. The new head gaskets are Felpro 6.5 turbo gaskets, +.010 thicker than stock (trying to drop the compression a little, since I'm adding a turbo). I expected the...

Weird turbo parts: where do these go?

I'm installing a turbo setup from a '93 K3500 on my M1009, and the parts box has these in it -- I think they are heat shields for the glow plug wires, but I can't figure out what they bolt to. And why do I have only 2? Anybody seen these?

CUCV FAQ Article incorrect: rear main seal

Just replaced the rear main seal in my M1009 and of course I read both the TM-34 and the CUCV FAQ article on this site beforehand. The FAQ article does NOT specify the same procedure as the TM (loosening all the main bearing caps and letting the crankshaft drop), and also states that 4 hands are...

    Hey Banks Turbo owners!

Question for y'all: Did the Banks kit come with a different CDR valve? Or did you keep the stock CDR? Seems like the CDR would have to be plumbed into the intake before the turbo (wouldn't work in stock location because crankcase pressure will be fighting against boost pressure?)

    CDR Valves: turbo vs non-turbo?

Will the stock n/a CDR valve work on a turbo-ed 6.2, if I make a new bracket and reroute the plumbing? Or is the opening/closing pressure different?

Any experience with new Odessa cyl. heads?

I'm looking at a pair of these on Flea-BaY:NEW GM/CHEVY 6.5 DIESEL(90°) ANGLE CYLINDER HEAD Item #160362649899 They're going for $650/pair, 2yr warranty, free shipping and no core charge. Might be cheaper than getting mine rebuilt, and it says they interchange with the 6.2 motor, but I wonder...

    6.2 J-code heads same as C-code?

One of my cylinder heads is cracked, but I have a junk 6.2 out of an '88 3/4ton suburban. Are the C-code heads the same as the cracked J-code ones?

    m1009 turbo/lift buildup

Been driving my 85 M1009 ("The General") for three years, and now its time for General V2.0! It's getting a set of 3/4ton axles, 2" add-a-leafs and Zero-rate blocks, 35X15 Swamper TSL-SX tires, and the turbo setup from a '93 K3500 6.5TD. Heres some pix from the first stage, swapping in the GM...

truck needs glowplugs even when warm???

Used to be, my M1009 would start right up after it had been warmed up, without using the glowplugs (fortunately I've got them on a button). Recently though, it began to need a few seconds of glowplugs even if I'd just shut it off. And now it's getting worse, takes about 10sec of glowplugs even...

fuel filter mod w/pix but still not running!

Just installed this Goldenrod filter system. The gauge on the left tells the pressure from between the electric fuel pump and the filter, and the petcock on top is for bleeding or transfer of fuel. The element is a 10 micron water-block. When I put this together, the truck would run for about...

Will Holley elec fuel pump handle diesel?

Since the untimely failure of my Walbro FRB-22 electric fuel pump (after only 1yr), I've installed a Holley "Blue" electric pump instead, because I had it lying around. It's 110GPH, 14PSI, which should be OK, but it was made for gasoline. The Holley website says not to use it with alcohol...

    walbro electric pump blowing bubbles?!

So I finally tracked down the air in my fuel system to the almost new (1yr old) walbro frb-22 electric fuel pump (marine version of the frb-5). This was literally the last place I looked. To test it i've got hosebarbs on the inlet and outlet, fuel hose running from both (with hoseclamps) into...
