What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

It would be a "fixed yoke conversion". Google it. Not worth the trouble. I had just traded a 55 M38A1 for that 84 K5. The first thing I did was take it wheeling. It immediately spit the front u joint out of the rear driveshaft. Lucky i had that soda bottle. Course now i bring a spare ujoint.

I love tools. Buy them every chance i get. There is simply no comparison to having the right tool for the job. That being said; it is still fun trail rigging stuff. Particularly when the tools are there but the right parts aren't. Lost the rear drive shaft on my 84 K5. Same t case as the m1009...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

No doubt. Someday I am going to have saved enough to buy land and build my shop. Mechanics that know the arcane ways are getting hard to find. As i just turned 49 today.. i am feeling more arcane all the time!

Torque King in Billings Montana has a special tool to facilitate inner axle seal replacement. Basically a jack screw with aluminum plates the size of the seal. I am sure you could fabricate one. Did mine when i replaced ball joints, axle joints etc. You will need a case spreader to get the...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I managed to drag the m1009 3 miles over the snow to the shop. Going to install an Off Road Designs 3" lift kit with shackle reversal in the rear. The front springs are shot. Why not upgrade? First i had to dig out 5 feet of snow. I am thawing out the gravel. Might take a few days. Why do a...

Argh! Don't tell me that! Forget what i paid.. but it was more than $10 at RA. Well.. They are pretty and shiny. You can see the newly soldered glow plug connectors from under there too.

True. I reused those washers. The bolts have a special knurling. It locates the starter housing. The housing also has round depressions machined where the washers fit.

Replaced my starter bolts with genuine AC Delco bolts. Noticed that the wrong ones were in there when i rebuilt and converted the starter to 12 volts. Wierdly, Rock Auto only sells them in a box of 5. Also soldered up some connections. Beautiful day in the middle of nowhere.

33x10.5x15 B F Goodrich AllTerrain KO2. I put them on the original M1009 rims i got with the truck. Not flashy, just practical. Better ice traction than the mud terrains for sure. Road noise maybe a bit less.

The civy blazers came with the 700r4 stock. My 84 had it. Deeper 1st gear and overdrive. With all the updates, they are an excellant transmission. You can add a manual switch to lock up the torque converter (just jump the wires on the brake pedal converter interrupt) and send them to a dash...

It was my fault. My 6.2 runs so good, it makes me mash the go pedal sometimes. I saw the rock ahead and decided against flipping the truck to avoid it. "Poof" came the rush of air. "Flop. Flop. Flop" Yea, i killed that tire dead. Dinged my cheap steel rim too. So i am putting the stock steel...

"I hit a sharp rock" (at 40 mph).

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

I hit a sharp rock while wheeling on BLM land. Cut the sidewall of my BFG mud terrain. Wyoming is brutal to trucks. So i bought 2 brand new 33x10.5x15 BFG All Terrain ko tires and had them installed on the original m1009 rims instead of the cheap set. I like them so much I have ordered 2 more...

That is one thing I won't be doing; replacing the motor. I dig the 6.2. Already have a K5 with a 400 small block. Sure power is fun. But wheeling at low speed with the diesel burbling along.. priceless. Also, my gas k5 gets 10 mpg dowhill with a tail wind.. even in perfect tune. My m1009 gets 17...

Since my exile; I have replaced all 8 glow plugs. Installed a new reproduction original style glow plug controller card WITHOUT after glow feature. Installed a front receiver hitch; Warn model 25855 so I can mount my Warn winch front or rear, along with solenoid isolated wiring to the front and...

I would think you would pull the heads anyways before you install the used motor just to be sure there are no problems. Why not pull them now and that way keep the cylinders lubed and be able to see if any obvious problems exist. I just can't imagine installing an engine that has been sitting...

Also wanted to add, for future engine storage; Not a lot of oil is spraying around inside the engine when you prime the oil pump on an engine stand or even crank the engine over with a starter. It drips out between the bearing journals. Even engines with oil holes in the connecting rods that...

Or sell it to me so I can replace the 400 in my 76 K5 with something that gets better than single digit mileage. I like the torque but sheesh! Always liked those smaller gas v8's. The GM 283, 305, the IH 304, Fords 302. Alltime favorite gas motor being the little Ford 200 cu inch inline six.
