    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

A minor tweak I made to reduce rattling. I made the safety cables double ended so that they can be removed while the generator is being used.

Here's a picture of the lights saved from the scrap bin.

This trailer is still going strong! Beat on it plenty. I did change the lights back over to military, but an LED set that I saved from the scrap bin.

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

I have not started my new thread on the second M116A3 build out, and this would be for it, but it's relevant here as well. It's missing one wheel stud. Search quick thinking it would be a simple find. Guess it isn't. Technical Manual has part number 12354223 as the stud. I'd guess that is a...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

I will be doing another M116A3 thread soon, documenting my converting it so a S-788 shelter can be mounted to it. I have everything already, just trying to wrap up other projects first. I also want to gut out the S-788 first.

They're not. I went through everything a while back. 100% functional. You can go back and see what I did on here. These were probably original shoes from the manufacture date, as were the others that failed. With 10,000+ hard miles, it's no big surprise they failed. Especially not knowing how...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

No problem on the part number. I think somewhere back in this thread, I shared it as well. I took them off and sold them. They made to much rattle when running the generator. I can put one on there if need be but in the time I have been using this trailer and almost 10,000 miles on it, I...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

Was using the trailer to move fuel to my new storage tank at the house, and since it's cooled off a bit here finally, when stopping, I noticed a nasty grinding noise since my windows were down. I knew exactly what it was. Pulled the hub off and found my brake shoes completely fallen apart, like...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

Spend a little time with the trailer since I needed to work on the generator a bit. Had one of the breaking caps that would leak grease bad. Replaced it and painted both the hubs. https://amzn.to/3RB9gJ0 Painted some spots where the paint came off and put the updated tire pressure where it...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

After thinking about it for well over a year, I made a spare tire carrier. Made it with some 2 inch angle iron & a generic Ford Super Duty spare tire holder between the 2 rearward cross members. I'm not a great welder but it should hold up. There is enough room between the rear tool box & the...

Trailer has been serving me well. Wanted to come back to share a GREAT link I found for parts on the brake actuator system. https://www.hawktet.com/product-category/brakeactuators/brake-actuator-parts/

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

After dragging my feet in installing it, I put the Pulsar solar battery maintainer on. Mounted the panel on the fuel tank because I wanted it to charge even when the cover is on the generator. Did the best I could to cleanly route the wires in safe areas. Panel is making 32v in full sun...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

    Well, rebuilding the brakes on the right side wasn't fun! Finally got to it. There were a bunch of videos already on YouTube on replacing & repairing sure brakes since Dexter has a lot of them on boat trailers. There are some differences though & I did make a quick video talking about them;

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

Decided to re-pack the bearings & investigate that grinding noise. Right side brake shoes came apart! Going to get parts & finish up when I have them. Left side was all good to go. Completely repacked & brakes adjusted nicely. Seals were good. I'm documenting everything on video to add to my...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

My past weekend trip with the trailer, I noticed a grinding noise when coasting & more so when slowing down. Thinking it may be worn brakes or sand got in there. Will need to dig in once I get some time. Also, I need to repack the wheel bearings. Also made some brackets for the fuel tank. I...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

Thanks for letting me know. I did end up just cutting it with it all together & welded a foot on. If I decide to make it a bit cleaner in the future, I will punch the roll pin out as you pointed out. :)

I got the vibration isolators for the fuel tank in today & installed them. Hopefully it makes a difference.

I could swear I have seen them setup both ways but never paid that much attention. I did it so that I could access the controls easier & because I wanted the tank closer to the truck. I ordered the tarp custom with the dimensions from the TM. EDIT: This is an old post, but I am going to be...

    M116A3 Fix-up & Conversion Thread

Did some minor work on the trailer. Re-routed the electrical leads out the bottom of the generator then cut a small hole for them to come up. Downsized to 3 outlets. Did this for two reasons... one was to change to 8 gauge wire.. Other is to the tarp could come all the way down to the mounting...

No, I didn't. I just had the local trailer shop weld an adjustable channel in place of the fixed ring. Cheaper that way anyways.
