What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Blackout marker lights are LED. One of the first applications.

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

Dialed back on the M1031 SECM governor adjustments..my load test is a trio of 3600 Watt water heater elements. In 1.25 gallon bucket of water, it went from 86°F to boiling in 2:30. 150 seconds. 37,500 BTU/hour. Discounting heat loss to the bucket. It needed the load so I could upset the...

Popped the cover off the SECM generator main connection box to see if I can make some magic happen. Magic like reconnection to produce 120/240 split phase when needed. It will fit a 4" cube. Looking good. The generator is a 12 lead, the two connection schemes are low wye (stock) and double...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

After 10 years of owning a M1031 SECM, I finally have the PTO generator governor running like it should. All it took was a simple geometry. The throttle actuator has about a 45° angle of throw, it had been set up all wrong, minimal linear throw. While it ran light loads fine, my 3x3500 Watt...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

The onboard air system in my M1031 SECM started leaking overnight. Pumped it up and sprayed fittings with soapy water. Both input flare fitting and the output Milton coupler were leaking. Replaced the coupler and tightened the flare fittings. Figured it was a good time to check tire...

What have you done to your CUCV today/lately - Part 2

On weekly PMCS, found the left rear clearance marker lamp on the M1031 SECM inop. A few years ago, I bought an entire set of lamp housings, amber and red, so this was just an easy swap..if my left hand worked correctly. So I dropped 3 nuts and lost a washer but with plenty spares, it is...

Those batteries appear to be valve regulated sealed lead acid type. This type uses a recombination catalyst that regenerates water from produced hydrogen and oxygen. This design is used in absorbed glass mat and flooded cells. It is best to have a good voltmeter in case of regulator failure...

The regular flavor anti seize is zinc based. Fine for aluminum. Copper is better for exhaust heat since zinc boils soon after melting.

That thermostat housing and coolant cross over top bolt is my only failure to extract broken bolt. I did all, including welding. Broke an extractor too, hitting it with the TIG torch to molten soften it up to make it drillable. I found the Helicoil kit and slathered those bolts in antiseize...

Should be quality. I always had issues getting grease to all 4 cups, the ones that fail were always dry. I even bought a quality press as I was doing it so often. Managed to find Spicer joints and no more failed joints.

Crusty. Use quality parts, I have been there many times because of cheap parts.

Oh yes. There was a time I was going to use an Arduino but an innovative chap in Scotland has a good kit for this application.

Stock 6.2 diesel. 36k miles, 27k with me behind the wheel since 2012. Yes, it only had 9k at liberation time from Ft. McCoy.

Ran the 1031 SECM for compressed air duty. Seasonal check on the motor pool plus did some plasma cutting for the 1031 twin VNT project. Why twins? Because these were a steal due to economy of scale. Each turbo is good for 120 HP or 20+ pounds mass of air per minute. Bear in mind, a stock...

Gaskets were purchased from Summit online, these are drop shipped from the distributor and not yet here. Got the Nylon rocker arm retainers today from them. I got the DB2829 overhaul kit from Amazon, it is Fulfillment by Amazon and sold by Badger Diesel.

Ordered parts for cylinder head gasket replacement. Only 36k miles on the 1031. Head gaskets are a time issue, not miles. Yes, even ordered the nylon rocker retainers. Sourced remanufactured heads if needed. These are furnace welded with hardened insert seats so they won't ever crack...

Circle red X that class 2 leak on the injector pump? Then I will put my initials next to it to allow limited operations?

Checked fluids, tire pressures x 5 and started it without drama. Around the block and up to temperature. Ran the PTO generator and ran the air compressor to drive water out of the air tank. Going to make this a weekly PMCS, minus the DA 2404 form.
