Temperatures may also make a difference. Asphalt can get softer in high tempts. I have heard (but never seen) bikes kickstands sinking into asphalt on very hot days. Hot here is over 100 degrees.
I went through a couple of bearings on my '76 Trans Am before I learned that a little loose is better then a little tight when securing the castle nut on the front spindle of that car.
The procedure was to tighten it to set the the bearings then back off before securing the nut. Assume...
I'm going to have to do this soon and wanted to verify the "Shock" method of tie rod removal.
1) Remove cotter pin and remove castle nut.
2) Re-thread castle nut upside down on tie rod to hold tie rod end when it pops loose.
3) Take a BFH and hit the steering knuckle sharply at the tie rod...
