I decided to swap out the front General Grabbers with Bridgestone L315's; the tires I originally wanted but could not find early on. I could not find L315's in anything less than sets of four. I then found and ordered the L315's from a third party called OTR Tires and they actually shipped them...
And to top it off...
Fresh new General Grabber OA Wide Base 385/65R22.5 tires on steel 22.5 X 12.25 4.75" offset five hand-hole stud-piloted rims.
The rims had to be custom ordered. 5 hand-hole in this type are basically "unobtainium".
Here we go with an update! I finally tackled my front outboard brake drum job. Fair warning: I did not go cheap on this one though. I ended up using all M939A2 parts, including spindles, both spindle nuts and lock washer, inner and outer bearings, oil seal, hubs, wheel studs, brake spider...
You would have to go up to 16.5 x 7 s-cams. All the M939-series trucks are 15" diameter. Seeing how the the same spider for the wedge brakes is used across all incarnations of the M939-series and the M809 and the M939A1/A2 axles are the same, then the spiders, s-cam brackets, s-cams and chambers...
Rear outboard drums, continued...
Machining the hub:
In order for the hub stud flange to fit inside the outboard brake drum, the flange needs to be turned down. I had the flange turned down to 13.010” OD which affords plenty of clearance on the drum back plate inner diameter (I placed a hub...
So, with the help of Member Glenngineer, I have figured it all out. We now have rear outboard brake drums adding more ease of maintenance to an already more reliable brake system. This new mod, however, will require some modifications to existing equipment and purchase of new parts.
You will...
All right my loyal followers, I am closing in a rear outboard brake drum solution with the help of Brother Glenngineer. It's not all locked down yet.
Be forewarned that the solution will require machining of the drive hub in order for the chosen drum to properly pilot to the hub. Next step is...
Yes, on the rears. I bought all my parts in a kit. If you piece the parts together you are going to find the spiders are the hardest parts to obtain.
I have not nor have I found anyone who has found a viable alternative in an s-cam to retrofit the Rockwell top-loader steer axle.
Yeah, I don't get that! Trick is to find a donor truck and do the work yourself. All you need is the spiders, drums, hubs and air chambers. Those will only work together and do not interchange with M809-series parts, but are common to the steer axle on all three truck series except for the...
I don't about using the original set up in conjunction with full air air brakes. You still have to actuate the master cylinder. I know Memphis Equipment does their conversions using an air chamber connected to a master cylinder to the front juice brakes. Whether it is routed into the air pack...
Thanks for your compliments. I'm going to put the cost around $6K. It was the brake kit plus shipping that drove up the cost. However, it took the guess work out of finding the right parts. I'm hoping my monetary sacrifice and the posting of part numbers will help others keep their costs down if...
All tubing and fittings connected to the front ports of both the primary and secondary driver's side tanks were removed. This also included the double check valve as the new dash control module has an integral double check that performs the same function.
Here are the before VVV pics...
The...
I preassemble all fittings to the SR-7 valve and installed a length of tubing on the balance port which will connect up to the existing balance fitting on the R-12 relay. The first thing I did on the truck was pull a new length of 3/8" tubing that would connect the push-pull spring brake valve...
I have decided to simplify the spring brake control system. I get to eliminate three valves when all is said and done. I was going to use this arrangement early on, but the parts (SR-7 valve) were more expensive at the time. So, I found and purchased an SR-7 Spring Brake Modulating Valve with a...
I installed a new M915 style battery box http://www.steelsoldiers.com/showthread.php?148460-M915-Battery-Box-on-M809-series. In doing so, the two inboard right-side air tanks I installed to supplant the primary and secondary tanks had to be removed for proper fitment of the box. That's OK, I...
This is a close up of the push-to-connect air brake fitting tee which delivers secondary service pressure to the spring brake valve control port and then on to the first double check valve.
The tractor protection valve and second double check valve are mounted up in the left frame next to the...
Well, I'm back for a little thread revival. I finally installed the PP7 trailer supply valve (Haldex equivalent), TP3 tractor protection valve and reincorporated the hand trailer brake control valve. The install included two double check valves (AKA shuttle valves) and all the associated tubing...
