I picked up the 1070 at Fontana, it was loaded with tools, even had four padlocks with keys, a cab full of crap, extra parts. Fontana basically has no one there, you check in at the office and you they say you need an escort but no one ever did. I was in the lot for about an hour and could have stole tools from other trucks or I could have stole a whole truck, the lot is wide open. The security is a joke. BIG MIKE told me when he was there looking at the truck for me the tow company just hopped truck to truck to get one to start and gave him a jump. What city or you in BTW?

Awesome, Im not gonna expect anything in the tool box but I hope My brother and I hit a jackpot in tools (one can hope). I also hope they are cool there, sounds like it. Im from the McMinnville area, so it will be a nice little drive. Did you pick that up recently? Im sure that 1070 # means something but Im tellin ya Im just learning :) A bottle jack is in my list of things to collect.

Sooo This is about the dumbest question yet.. But I've been reading and see people say you need insurance on the truck and registration to drive it without getting hassled by CHP. Does this mean to even drive the truck on/off the Fontana lot I need to get insurance/registration on this truck specifically? I thought having insurance on my current rig with the registration and I was golden,, ohhh boyy... You have to stop at weight stations driving one of these rigs in California?(requiring a trip permit) I apologize for these rookie questions, Im nervous now due to the fact we are suppose to leave wednesday afternoon.. Any quick advice is appreciated.

If you don't stop at the weight stations they just might come chasing you with the red and blues on in CA. In Utah it is currently not required for private vehicles and if unladen they usually just wave you on and not even have you roll across the scales...but CA I have seen it go both ways. (I have a Motorhome (3 axle) and a cattle truck (without cattle (3 axle) to haul stuff home) that we take to CA on occasion I have not had issues in CA without a CDL as Utah does not require CDL on a private/non commercial 3 axle but I did get "run down" when I didn't stop at a weigh station heading into CA with my cattle truck even with it being empty and just running the deck without any of the sides on it but never stop at them with the motorhome)
Yes legally you need to have insurance coverage on any vehicle being operated on state/federal roads.

If you don't need a CDL to drive the truck in your home state, you should be fine with a trip permit and your regular insurance. Just bring one of your insurance cards with your current info on it. You might call your Insurance company too. As far as the scales go, I think the only northbound scales are in Cottonwood, I can't remember if there is any down by the grapevine. Make a temporary sign that says "Private Use Not for Hire" Put that on both doors where a DOT or CA number would go. Its obviously not a commercial vehicle being used to haul goods for profit.

Never hurts to have cash.

Got to say that you've done your homework, for sure. You should be good.

Looking forward to the photos.

Have fun and be safe. This is the kind of adventure you'll be talking about for years. My dad and I still talk about picking up my M1008 in Barstow from 2008!

Hey guys, you mention a CDL. I'm in PA, where do I go to find out if a CDL is necessary in my state to drive a 5-ton. I know I'm fine for a 2.5 ton. Sorry if it is a stupid question, just curious.

Best is call your state's Drivers license division and ask them.
