So I'm looking at buying a paint gun to paint the bed of my M1009 and some other small parts. I'll be shooting Rapco 383 green CARC substitute cut 4-1 with Xylene per Rapco's specs.

Ive done a little painting here and there but never really had to set up a spray gun. The gun I'm looking at comes with a 1.3mm tip and I can buy a 1.5mm, 1.7mm or 2.0mm tip if need be. How do I know what tip I need?

I think Rapco calls for a 1.8 tip on their paint. I've shot a lot of it with the standard $9.99 HF paint gun and I think they're a 1.4 or 1.5 tip. I just turned the pressure up a bit and it shot fine.

I bought an HVLP paint gun from Harbor freight and sprayed my truck with primer and the Rapco 383 cut with xylene 4 to 1 right out of the box. It turned out better than I expected!

All of these pictures are Rapco paints with the small tipped HF cheapie gun:

Me too HF gun with 1.4 tip. I just shot some clear coat for the first time with the same gun worked ok.

I've actually shot pretty much everything through their crappy guns and I have to say, I think they're very good guns. I have a $400 Sata that I barely use anymore. The HF cheapies are so cheap they're disposable.

At my last job (the one that ended in 2013), we started doing some paint work as the company was collasping (a desperate move to make money any way they could). So we ended up doing a bunch of weird side jobs and I shot a fair amount of base/clear paints and even a few pearl jobs (base/clear/pearl) and we were very happy with the results in all these cases).

I am going to paint u/RustyJunk's W500 next year in base/clear and I am going to use a HF gun. I'll post pics when I'm done.

Thanks for the replays guys, I appreciate the feedback.

All your trucks look great. I think I'm just going to wing it and shoot a few test panels with a 1.3 tip and see what happens! It sounds like it should work just fine!
