Found one of these close by. Says that it has a 6.5 engine. How does one tell if it is the one that had #8 cylinder issues? Also, how can you tell what transmission is has and how do you check for blow by? I haven't had any experience with these but am looking to purchase one as a daily driver if possible.

Crawl under it and look for the data plate on transmission and transfer case.

If you don't know much about them I'd take someone with you who does, will save you a headache later.

also weak #8s were early blocks so check to see if it's early or late

I have no clue. This is why I am asking for advice.
That is a link to a thread read it as there are a few things that will tell what it is.
If your totally new to these my best advice is to hold off on getting one and spend a bunch of time on here read random threads about HMMWV's and become a informed buyer. Read the -10 TM before going and look at them . And try and find a member in your area that has one that would go look the truck over with you.

look at the shifter. does it have a park position and an over drive position.
probably a 4l80.
if no park position or over drive probably still the original 3l80.

Like others have said.
Do some homework first.
Read the TM first.
Find somebody who has one to go look at it with you.
Take some overalls or a creeper and roll around under it tap on the frame rails .
Research the Vampire problem and inspect fluid level in transfer case or look for a bypass hose on transfer case and lines that used to go to them.
Check air filter.

Lets ask this. Am I nuts for wanting one of these to drive to and from work, 10 miles? I would most likely not go more than an hour away in this thing. Is this going to be a maintenance nightmare? Just trying to gain information to see if I should steer away from this.

WOuld the 4 speed be better for the road? THere are more 3 speeds out there that I am seeing and would like to buy the better one overall. Most of the time it will be the daily driver but there will be times that I will need to tow some things.
No they are solid all I mean is you aren't going faster than 55mph ish in one

We live in a wonderful world whereas almost any vehicle ever built is for sale.
Just check Hemmings, Craigslist, cars for sale, eBay, Bring your own trailer and Autotrader.

There is 55 of different flavors of these for sale in Wheeling, WV
Must be owners near you that would explain some things.

Do you usually maintain your own vehicles? It will cost more to fix.
A 94 hmmwv is a 24 year old vintage military tactical vehicle.

Only the seller knows what is there for sale and maybe not even the seller.

I add to all the suggestions above, you asked, to read what has already been posted.
A good place to start would be in the stickies then read of the posts in there.

Read about 20 hours and maybe answer your question.

You will pay thpusands more for a 4 speed.

Is there a lot off repair on these?
As frank pointed out do you do your own maintenance ?
Your probably not going to find many local auto repair shops that work on them ( or if they try they don't know what they are doing).
Mv's tend to be owner maintained vehicles.

#8 cylinder issue was a Turbo problem. The casting numbers at the rear of the block are the only reliable way to tell what vintage engine you have.

For the GEP 6.5's its all in the casting numbers. The correct casting numbers for a GEP block (located on the other flange (right side)from the XXXX506 casting numbers) are two digit pairs followed by a letter, for example;

03 17 S

which indicates March 17, 2010. GEP began marking this way in 2000 starting with the letter H, skipped I (so as not to be confused with 1), and so on. S indicating 2010. Not sure how long that continued. Of course it has the opposing triangles in the valley as well.

Old style GM blocks were of the format that began with a letter. For example;

B212

I'm not sure how to decode these, but I know its been discussed elsewhere.

Go test drive one. Only then will you be able to answer your own questions.
In past threads you said you wanted something different. It fits that requirement.
But so does the civilian version.
We have all asked you in past threads if you plan on doing your own work on it or paying someone to do it.
You have replied you don't mind wrenching on it but at this time don't have much time to do so.
Like Porky and others have said if you don't end up doing your own work on it , finding a shop to do the work may be a problem.
Parts for them aren't always easily available like going to the auto parts store.

Do you have a place big enough to park it out of the weather ?
They all leak eventually.
Do you plan on being able to have a normal conversation with another passenger while driving? ( not going to happen without investing in some form of crew comm. in HMMWV)
Civilian version no problem.
You like creature comforts? Heat A/C, music? Civilian version no problem. HMMWV not impossible just more money out of your pocket.

Towing:
HMMWV's aren't set up for towing civilian based things. With that said you can convert to tow stuff just more money
Civilian version no problem.

Do I think your nuts for wanting one? No
Do I think your nuts for wanting one as a daily driver? YES

Find one and test drive it.
Only then will you know if your scratching an itch or have come down with MV fever.

Food for thought

I know of a civilian Hummer, almost new, that got driven off the highway at high speed and went and took out a restaurant 1880's flagstone foundation. No fault of the driver or the truck, It was medical issue.
All the electrics still worked, doors still worked, no intrusions into the cab, black box showed that as it folded up underneath and bent and twisted, the engineered and planned crushing allowed the airbags to NOT inflate as there was not enough G's. This all happened in about 4 feet of foundation which dead stopped the truck.
It was totaled beyond repair but the driver went uninjured. The transmission went down and the back of the engine went up. I have about a hundred photos if anyone is interested but that truck is really built well. The husband went out and bought Her another one.

But I suspect you just want the tactical military type truck. Here in SF the civil trucks run all over the place (Casinos, lots of money) but the military versions I see and know of just a few.

Both versions are expensive to keep up.
