G'day everyone,......

XP-82 Twin Mustang Prototype Flies for the first time in 49 years.

It wasn’t supposed to. But it did.

Talk through the aviation grapevine:

They’ve been restoring this one for over 10 years. It last flew on Dec 14, 1949. Yesterday was a planned high speed taxi, the last step before going for return to FAA flight certification. Just a couple of quick trips down the runway.

Wellllll...

The XP-82’s twin engines put out a combined 3,720 hp. That is about 2.5 times as much as the single, and earlier model, engine of the P-51.
It also only weighs about 1.5 times as much as a P-51.
These are good things.

The pilot accelerated, and it popped into the air R F N! Since it was safer to continue on than try to bring her down on the remaining runway, he went for a nice ride of about 15 minutes.

Unbelievably, the flight generated no squawks.
The pilot said no trim was needed to fly straight and level.

That’s the first time it’s been in the air in 49 years and some good **** news in my opinion
.
