I had to start at the beginning
https://watchtime.me/life-style/vintage/article/832/a-short-history-of-railroad-watches

http://www.railswest.com/time/watches.html

and the Sir Stanford Fleming book
Uniform non-local time Terrestrial time
which is 25mb
Now I know the why and When
Interesting reads both, but neither really delved into the top watches. The top was "Hamilton" followed by "Waltham" then "Elgin" . Hamilton was bought by a Swiss company in 1969 and is still made today.
A excellent book to read about watch repair is "The Watch Repairer's Manual" by Fried. Get the fourth edition if you can afford it. That and the military's excellent TM 9-1575 .

60 bucks and down
ISBN 10: 0918845114 / ISBN 13: 9780918845115

I have to sell something else first and I have not a clue how the gears and the little bitty screws are made.
