Air/Hydraulic Unit Issue

While replacing the air springs for the cab, I thought it would be a good idea to remove the Air/Hydraulic power unit and clean it up. I did that ... removed all the old fluid and cleaned it up. I did not rebuild it. When I put everything back together and lowered the cab I noticed puffs of oil infused air coming out of the "muffler" (term used in TM) The net result was my nice clean power unit was now sprayed with fluid.

My question is:
  • is this normal?
  • should I replace the "muffler"?
  • is there something going on in the manifold body?
  • or .... is this a reflection of a problem further into the belly of the beast pump?
Thanks in advance for any advice that you can offer ....

Do you normally keep the cover on the pump? Is it missing?

I don’t see it in your picture.
