engine lift or gantry

I'm thinking about buying the gantry lift from Harbor Freight for lifting my engine into place and possibly later on taking the body off the frame. Is the gantry overkill or can I do it all with a cherry picker?

i used that crane to mount the body by myself. with a chain hoist, you can move things up and down slow and smooth. lowering with the cherry picker requires a smooth twist of the release knob or it will drop. I used the cherry picker for 2 humvee motors just fine, and you can push it out of the way.

I have both, I prefer the gantry for most things since the reach is not limited like on a cherry picker. Also as mentioned above a chain hoist has a lot better control on lowering the load. Also some times its a challenge with having the cherry pickers legs interfering with the tires, jackstands etc. Generally for pulling and installing an engine the cherrypicker works fine.

I looked at the gantry crane on H.F. for my trucks but it's not wide enough to clear the fenders on my 5 ton. The HMMWV is pretty wide also correct? Just make sure it'll clear the fenders.

HF gantry has over 93" between posts. HMMWV body is 84" wide.

I sold my crane but kept the chain hoist thinking I could just use it in the basement on the steel I-beam. Well, now I live in FL and there are no basements....
