Read / Unread messages

Ok, so perhaps I'm missing it, but what are the rules around when messages go from unread to read?

Example: I'll open a forum, see the list of messages, get distracted by life, come back in an hour and refresh. And everything is read.
Or read some, and not have them show up as read, and then later, they will.

I'm sure there's a pattern here, but it doesn't seem to be "Messages are read after you read them."

When you open the specific forum.

How about if you never open a forum? I tend to go homepage -> new posts ->read some ->distracted by work -> darn, they're all read.

Just don't work and everything will be fine.

New posts polls posts since last viewing, effectively marking forums read.
