how much open space is there between the fifth wheel and and the rear of the stuff behind the cab(tool box, spare, etc)? is it the same for all mil tractors?

One thing to remember is that not all kingpins are spaced the same distance. You may pull one trailer and have adequate clearance and get up under another one and be right up against the spare tire rack, etc.
That is one reason civilian trucks have sliding 5th wheels (that and to redistribute weight).
Before you buy a trailer for your tractor check the distance between the center of the kingpin and the nose of the trailer.

it really depends on TRAILER setup. King pin setback and head board width -the distance from kingpin to either front corner. Lowboy goosenecks are aprox 4 feet wide with an 18 inch setback. Van trailers 7 ft 8inches wide and 30 to 48 inch setback. So most commercial tractors have slider fifth wheels. Hope this clears things up a little. Gary:grin:

Download a copy of TM 43-0001-31 and get all dimensions. The M819 wrecker/tractor probably has the shortest measurement from 5th wheel to nearest obstruction and can only pull some trailers intended to be loaded by the crane on the tractor, sort of what you have in mind, no doubt.
The xm757 has 68 inches of clearance.....with the HIAB mounted as shown, the left over would be 44 inches.
