I would read this thread from the beginning. It is very informative.

It usually won't run but only a minute or so when pumping up the lift pump by hand, if it will run at all. The pump is on the engine so if there is a leak between the pump and the tank it will not be able to prime and draw fuel as it is only sucking up air.
