I'm booked up this weekend but if you are coming through you are welcome to drop it by the house. I can give it a once over and let you know what I think.
If the oil pressure light is on you will not get any control power. Nothing will work. The hour meter will not work. While its running with the oil light on click the start/run switch off and back on quickly enough that the engine doesn't shut down.
Standard wiring convention is to use RED and BLACK for load, WHITE for neutral, and GREEN as ground.
This might be a little late in the process to ask but what is your experience with wiring of this type? Are you comfortable with doing residential power wiring?
You can't change the breaker to the factory outlet. The wiring inside won't handle that much power. You will want to install an outlet on the main lugs of the generator.
I'll be happy to help with the generator.
Looks like you are only about an hour away if you want to drag it over to Efland.
Its pretty simple. You use a spring scale and adjust the magnet to get a pull-off force of 4 lbs +\- 0.25 lbs.
disconnect the governor rod from the governor bracket and use that hole to connect the scale.
Its worth a try but I've found that once they start doing that it will get worse and worse till the thing is uncontrollable. Replacing the governor resolves the problem.
Based on a quick read that one won't provide the variable speed functionality of the OEM controller.
It would be nice to be able to get those things apart so the nature of the failures can be determined.
When I remove them I use a couple large screwdrivers and some wedges between the stator and the engine. Slowly work the stator off the rotor. Be mindful of where you apply pressure as to not damage the windings of the stator.
I'm sure there is a special tool for that somewhere. I use what I...
I'm building a replacement for the actual speed controller itself. Unfortunately my contract on the west coast has been extended so I won't be home to finish the project up till the fall of the year. It will be one of my priorities when I wrap up this project.
That amount of pull-off is what...
Keep an eye on that controller. What you are describing with the thing freaking out after a while is the beginning symptoms of controller failure.
Glad you have the magnet setup working better. What is the pull-off force right now?
I have used voltage and frequency to set one up. Use the one you have the gear to measure. You will be fine.
Frequency will be a tad more accurate but not so much so to make a difference in operation.
Yep. The magnet is too strong. Get it down to 4.5 lbs and see if it will pull off. Its a compromise between weak enough to pull off but strong enough to hold it for shutdown.
Try this for troubleshooting. Before you try to start the unit unstick the magnet from the target. Turn the unit to run on the switch. See if you see the arm on the actuator jump. On all mine the target pulls away from the magnet as soon as you turn the unit on.
I have a prototype going. I've not been able to work on it for the last year because I'm on a big engineering project that is 3000 miles from home. I'll be on the project through Sept of 2017. I won't be able to make any real progress on it till I get back home.
Of the 6 MEP831 generators I've...
Certainly check for loose connections. That is always the first thing to run down. Check for 24v DC power at the governor module when you have the "RUN" switch on. Make sure power to the governor follows the "RUN" switch position correctly.
Before this happens does the generator regulate...
Can you describe the events in the sequence as you know more?
Does the magnet capture the throttle target and the engine continues to run or does the magnet not capture the target?
If you flip the "RUN" switch back on does the generator pick up and control speed again?
What happens if you...
