Yes, I ran the PLC off of the MEP's 24v batteries. This worked fine as long as the batteries were fully charged, but if they were depleted at all, then the relays on the PLC would drop in and out during cranking. To avoid this, I used a time delay relay for the cranking output. This would...
It was pretty cold this morning, so I shot a cold start video; the genset fails to start on the first attempt. When it finally does start, it is just on 2 cylinders so there is plenty of diesel smoke! It does demonstrate what the PLC is capable of with no input from me...
Yep!
Pics posted below.
To everybody who I emailed the PLC program to, here is how the connections should be made:
Power to the PLC: tb 5-10
Fuel pump/shutoff solenoid output Q1: TB 5-7
Manifold heat/glow plugs output Q2: K2-X1
Start relay output Q3: TB 5-9
Field flash output Q4: TB 4-10...
No problem; if anybody wants the file, just shoot me a PM with your email address and I'll send it to you.
You can download the programming software for free from FactoryMation...here's the link:
SG2-SW
And some links to some documentation:

No problem; it is small and I can email it to you...
I'll take all of the extra compressor control stuff out of it.
The one thing I ran into was that the output relays would "flutter" while the engine was cranking. This only happened if it was really cold out, or the batteries were partially...
That would be fairly easy to program into the PLC; the possibilities for automation are nearly limitless. You could make the generator start up under just about any kind of input...weather (rain, wind, how bright the sun is shining, etc.), when a load switches on (as you were describing with...
Ladder logic is easier than you think...I figured my first program out with zero help, prior experience, etc. The cost of the PLC and housing is less than $100; and the options for programming are unlimited. The software is free from the manufacturer. I would me more than willing to email my...
I got it from here:
Home - FactoryMation
I buy lots of stuff from them for my projects...always been happy with their prices, shipping, etc.
Probably spent over $10k there in the last 5 years for mag starters, PLC's, relays, etc.
I didn't describe it in detail in my initial post...but that's exactly what I did. The PLC's outputs are tied directly into the generator's switch (via the appropriate terminal boards). The PLC operates the set almost exactly the same way that the master switch would, utilizing the relays...
I didn't; that isn't something that had crossed my mind...
I suppose it would be easy to add, but I'm not really sure when it would be necessary. The PLC does flash the field for a full 15 seconds on startup. My thought was that if it wasn't producing power after that, something must be...
A big Master hitch lock!
I suppose they could still rig up some way to chain the trailer tongue to the hitch, but it makes it difficult enough that I don't expect anybody to try...
It allows me to leave the genset/compressor and any other tools at a jobite because the doors can be closed and locked. And, it keeps everything out of the weather...
I have run it for longer in the closed trailer; for a few hours at a time. The trailer isn't insulated and it seems to shed...
I actually built this and shot the video several months ago, but I've been to lazy to post it up here.
I had a really nice low hour -003A that I had been using to power tools at remote job sites, backup power for my shop, etc. I was just loading it onto my flatbed trailer as needed, but I...
