The origanal milatary hoses came with an adapter, to connect two hoses together. AND, it was to allow you to join both ends of the hose to keep the hose from being contaminated with dirt and crud.

What ever you do, when you get it, take the time to rub some silicone grease into the rubber. It keeps the rubber from cracking. If the bung adapter is outside in the sun, once, twice a year is good.
I have in my garage, a WW2 Whermact fuel can, that will not only accept the Scepter fuel nozzle, but when put side to side next to a brand new Scepter can, is impossible to tell the difference. Great design. And built to last. I had a nice SS can, but when someone offered me several hundred...
