    Stud welding with common tools?

    why not just drill/tap the plate , use a double-ended manifold-style bolt or threaded rod cut to your needed length, and spot-weld it from turning? If your stud-gun welder cant do it, maybe since you don't indicate the thickness of the plate nor the expected torque of the nut to hold whatever...
