Have you tried good old chemical paint stripper on the sticky parts on that gas tank? Sometimes that will loosen and or dissolve that under coating. Might be worth a shot? Keep up the good work it is looking good!
There can be many reason the engine was replaced. More power being one of them. I would just paint the engine OD like the original should have been and not worry about it. Nobody is going to look at it and say "hey that's the wrong engine." Painting what's in there that works is easier than...
Could your steering wheel be from a CCKW? The truck might have gone through a depot rebuild at some point and the 4 spoke wheel was put on....you know grab one from the pile of parts kind of thing?
So, are you going to restore it as a fire truck in it's original configuration as it came from the factories or are you just going to set it up as a cargo trucK?
